Can someone give me the skinny on game music?

Post by cabrando »

Just started looking into it and just wanted some general info (review sites, places to buy, etc..).

Are soundtracks released for all games? What about older games such as nes?
I saw the Mega Man 9 OST on Play Asia but it was something like $23 or $29, I thought that was a little pricey.

It seems like this is much bigger in Japan and the states may not even get these releases?

I did find some sites to download the mp3's, khinsider and vgmusic. Are there better places to get them?

Sorry if this seems all over the place, really just looking for general info as I'm just getting into it.

EDIT: I meant to post this in the whatever forum if a mod can move it for me.

Many Japanese (Mario, Mega Man, etc.) games have their soundtracks released, but I don't bother finding out where to get them since they're expensive and easily pirated. It does seem that having soundtracks is more of a Japanese thing, though many American made PC games (Quake, Half-Life, etc.) have soundtracks available. KHInsider is a good place for VGMusic rips. Another good place to go to is the Galbadia Hotel. VGMusic is just remixes done by random dudes with keyboards.

If it's just a single song you're wanting, ripping off youtube with something like zamzar.com can do well too, this normally works well for hard to find songs in my experience

but what if I want it to go the legal way? I would like to have all the songs from Jet Set Radio except the ones that are on the official soundtrack. Could you help me? I do not mind be it a CD or a digital download..

Remember, it's not illegal unless you're caught. The chances of anyone suing you for downloading a video game soundtrack are negligible. So really, don't worry about it. There's no ethical obligation to obey an unjust law anyway.
