Re: Best of the 7th generation in console/handheld gaming
No order.
1) Portal. I haven't gotten around to Portal 2, but this game is just sublime in every way. Very fun and intuitive puzzles. Great physics and original ideas. Very well written. Aesthetically, it looks nice. I loved that it was like a 2 hour game too, just a perfect experience for me.
2) Street Fighter 4. I got into fighters during the 6th Gen, and it was basically a barren wasteland. Kinda similar to how Shoot Em Ups are, fighting games were pretty niche. I used to dream of playing fighters online with decent connection, or people caring about fighters again in general. This game felt like a true sequel to SF2 (my favorite SF until SF4 came out), and it got everyone caring about fighters again. Now there are more fighters than people can keep up with! Ironically enough, this generation I barely played fighters and I still don't know SF4 to this day.
3) Starcraft 2. I think this was probably my GOTY for 2010, though I barely remember what came out that year. This game is just phenomenal. I never played the single player mode which is supposed to be fantastic, but the multiplayer really is just tons of fun. So much strategy and depth. It did a great job at giving a similar experience to the original Starcraft.
4)League of Legends. I remember there was some guy here who got really angry because Draven beat Link in a gamefaq poll, so if you're that guy just gloss over this part of the post. Moba games are great. Yes, you heard me great. Yes, there is no plot and yes people do get mad if you're bad, but if you have tough skin and don't cry like a girl, it delivers a satisfying experience that you can't get in other video games. The level of strategy, teamwork and gratification is very high. There's nothing like making a big play in a Moba game, makes you feel like you're a star athlete or something.
5)Dota 2. It took me forever to get into this game because my internet connection has been crap until I recently fixed it (still bad, but playable). League of Legends and Dota 2 are very different games, but I think Dota 2 is overall the better game. League of Legends focusing a bit more on RPG aspects, much slower, more farming involved. Dota much more about making plays, aggression and ruthless ganks.
6) Demon Souls - I've only played about an hour of Demon Souls and an hour of Dark Souls, but it's enough for me to say that those games are awesome. I'm probably going to get Dark Souls tomorrow during Thanksgiving, but I love how raw those games feel.
7) Team Fortress 2 - Team Fortress Classic is one of my favorite games of all time, so I was pumped when TF2 was finally going to come out. I was so happy that the game had become so popular because TFC kinda became an after thought, but when I finally got around to playing it I was pissed on how dumbed down the game was. After a while though, I started to appreciate that while the game was much more accessible to crowds, it was overall an entirely different experience from TFC. In some ways, TF2 is much more about team work and synergy rather than mastering high skill curve like in TFC.
Charles Barkley, Shut Up: Jam Gaiden - This is by far the funniest game I've ever played. I'm a big basketball fan, so it was already funny seeing a game use all these famous basketball players in such a cheesy plot. The satire of the Japanese RPG is priceless, hearing that giant rant by that weaboo robot you have to talk to save was the best part of the game. I think of all the indie games that have gotten big craze, this one kinda got forgotten about.
9) Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition - Okay, semi-cheating here, but it's the best game on the Wii, so it needs representation.
10) Donkey Kong Country Returns - I'm not big on the original SNES ones, felt like they got by too much on graphics and ambiance ala Kirby. DKCR has such tight controls, great aesthetics and a good difficulty. I didn't think the waggle controls were a big deal at all, and I think it prematurely turned off people from giving this game a chance (though it is obviously still very popular).
I still haven't played a lot of games from this generation. I haven't played any console games that came out this year. I haven't played any DS or PSP stuff for the most part. I'm still ignorant on most of the PS3 exclusives. Hell, I haven't played a lot of the multiplat single player stuff like Red Dead and what not.

I think I have to find a place for Tomb Raider in my list...that game is just too good not to be included.
