Really? Most arcade games are designed to be pretty damn tough to beat the first loop on one credit. "Easiest thing in the world" seems quite hyperbolic...dogman91 wrote: Problem with this is beating a single loop is about the easiest thing in the world for some of these games.
The rule is simple: you can list a game as "beaten" on your list if you feel like you've beaten it. It isn't a competition thread or a thread where we take people to task for bucking some "standard". Asking questions of clarification from time to time is fine (e.g. "How do you 'beat' Combat?" or "Wow, did you 1cc that shmup?"), but suggesting that someone can't or shouldn't count a game on their list hasn't ever been the spirit of this thread.
Re: Games Beaten 2013
Don't worry, all I care about is myself so whatever anyone else does is no 'skin off my nose'.
At least when it comes to "arcade game beaten" ideas. Not trying to shove an agenda down anyone's throat, though they're welcome to chime in if they think it's useful to them personally and all that yada yada.
I find it doesn't take much practice to beat a first loop of Donkey Kong for instance; maybe there's higher difficulty settings in the 'dipswitch' settings that would negate this but I haven't checked. I'm not too experienced with older arcade games.
Getting an idea of a nice balanced goal that would feel like overcoming a challenge that lasts more than a day's worth of practice yet not mastering it completely and fully where it takes forever like Billy Mitchell and Steve Weibe is kind of what I'm looking for. Finding a "standard" to shove all these games under for instance just makes it easier, at least to me, to not have to 'assess' every game, which would be nice IMO. Passing all the "default high scores" and getting to loops that repeat themselves specifically with no more added enemies/obstacles/enemy difficulty seems like a good point for 'completing' one of these. Maybe this is a really long-winded post... hmm.
edit: yeah I could just play for high score too like INTENDED, but eh.

This. Just accept that some games you play aren't being played to add to this list!dogman91 wrote:

Luke: you must be really piling on the hours right now. HowLongtoBeat lists the combined average of the 6 games you beat since Saturday at a little over 40 hours
Re: Games Beaten 2013
I picked up where I left off with SOTC, and I doubt it took me over two hours to completely wipe out THPS. But the only engagement I had yesterday was a rotary club meeting so I did spend most of the day in front of the television.
All I need to do today is some final Christmas shopping, and then I'm probably going to plug in the xbox and go at it. I've never beaten Dragon's Lair 3D, and I need to rectify that.

Re: Games Beaten 2013
Which THPS did you like more, Luke? Dreamcast or PlayStation? For some reason, it's easier to play the PlayStation version of THPS, and then Dreamcast version of THPS, like you did. Surprisingly, the games were more difficult having not played them in 10+ years.
Re: Games Beaten 2013
I used to be a very sub-par skateboarder who could easily pull off a whopping three inch ollie (hey, a double vision weighs a ton) so I'm a bit of a skateboard purist. My favorite skating game ever is THPS on the Playstation.Blu wrote:Which THPS did you like more, Luke? Dreamcast or PlayStation? In THPS, yes some of the runs you can land are ridiculous, but not completely unbelievable. I loved the addition of the manual in THPS 2, but pulling a 720 was easy as pie. And then THPS 3 was bonkers as you were grinding on dinosaurs and electric wires.
I can understand gamers wanting to do the absurd, but I like THPS as it seems more like a skating sim.
I also own THPS 2x for the xbox which allows you to use the manual in THPS, but I'm always drawn to the original Playstation game. To me it is the best of the series. That said, my favorite runs are street runs that are heavy on short board flips while rotating and switching up grinds. And that's probably because that's all I can do in real life (minus the rotations. I'm lucky to pull off a kick flip).

When I was trying to beat every game on MAME my requirements for beating games were:dogman91 wrote:If anyone has an idea on the 'parameters' for these endless arcade games I'd be glad to hear it. On my backloggery I have a little note for myself on the sidebar that indicates when a game is beaten/completed according to my personal preferences and I'm not too satisfied with this portion of it:Problem with this is beating a single loop is about the easiest thing in the world for some of these games. I like the "beat the top default high score" idea.*Endless arcade games: Nulled, or beaten only when the rounds start to repeat themselves and your score exceeds past the default high scores. No continues/new credits. Highest difficulty. Capping the highest score possible in the game counts as "mastered".
edit: adjusted the quote a bit to reflect the 'beat the default scores' thing.
Sure some games are setup that you will always get the highest score at the end of the first run, but that is just the nature of the beast. But this works for the vast majority of games out there. I got to the Ms before I gave up (granted that was a very long time ago).1. Complete the game if it is possible – this is by finishing the actual “story mode” and defeating a final boss.
2. If task one is impossible, obtain the highest score.
