If you do end up liking the SNES version, you'll love the 64 version. That's pretty much all I have to say on that.
There was also a Platinum and Indigo version. That would match all the Gamecube colors then, correct? The black one was the only color available in North America.

I'd recommend the Castlevania GBA games for a start? When in doubt, Castlevania.
Also I remember that Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga used an enhanced-for-Game Boy Player color palette. (There were some other games that did that but I'm not too sure what.)
