Seems like a whichever is cheaper or whichever console you prefer deal.
This is an interesting read:

But yeah, the differences are very slight.

Also for those who have played both this and Bahamut Lagoon, how does the combat system compare?
Not all that similar. The closest would incidentally be its sequel OB64, so that doesnt count. The next closest is possibly the PC series Disciples. I havent played it yet, but I hear Chaos Wars is also similar. There are even some similarities to FFXIII, but only comparing squad battles and using the tactic commands change strategies.
There are no games quite like MotBQ and OB64, and that's really a shame. Army management style > square/hexagon tactics style.
Soul Nomad & The World Eaters actually has the same kind of combat (you build a unit, members of the unit take actions based on their position), but rather than being real time with pause it's turn based movement on a grid.

Ack, with regards to Bahamut Lagoon the only real similarity is the emphasis on building a synergistic unit.

Bahamut Lagoon is kind of like Shining Force - Ogre Battle is entirely different.

Last time I played both games I had an easier time with Ogre Battle though. Probably because it was in English.

Always wanted to check this game out. PSO will likely take up my time in Jan, then I have school so I'm not sure if I can jump in on this >.<.

Anyone know how long it takes to beat the game?

It takes a while. The maps take a while to beat because you can't skip animations (due to various game mechanics) and your movement speed is slow. If you're not good at the army planning and get defeated in individual combats a lot it can take much longer.

You can change the movement speeds on the map and turn off animations. I used to rent it and beat it before it needed to be returned, but I was also well polished with the mechanics. It will be slower going for someone new to the game.
