I didn't feel that way. The camera stuff is superficial. The gameplay was just your typical Mario stuff. Jump on enemies, toss some fireballs, go down a few pipes, hit some coin boxes. I just kept waiting for something fresh in that game and never got it. It was a solidly put together game, but it all felt so familiarStark wrote:Maybe not the thread for this, but I take umbrage that Super Mario 3D Land was Nintendo "phoning it in." They do a lot of unique tricks with the fixed camera and level design that belies that entirely.Gamerforlife wrote:I kind of agree. SMB 2 and 3 had a certain magic for me when I was a kid. You've described 90% of Mario platforming games since 1985Gamerforlife wrote:I just kept waiting for something fresh in that game and never got it. It was a solidly put together game, but it all felt so familiar

There are also the propeller boxes and coin boxes and other items that set it apart. Shrug. IMO, 3D Land doesn't truly open up until you've beaten the first 8 worlds.Gamerforlife wrote:I didn't feel that way. The camera stuff is superficial. The gameplay was just your typical Mario stuff. You might like the 3D World one, it has a lot of unique items like the double-cherry. Which adds an element that is entirely new to Mario platformers (as far as I know), duplicates that you control all at the same time.
Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.

That does sound kind of neat. The Wii U version does sound a lot more ambitious than its 3DS counterpart from what I have heardStark wrote: There are also the propeller boxes and coin boxes and other items that set it apart. I feel like SMB 2 and 3 did some interesting new things with the formula. So did Yoshi's Island, which I found far more interesting and exciting as an SNES Mario game than Super Mario World.Damm64 wrote:Witch games are the 10% ?dsheinem wrote:You've described 90% of Mario platforming games since 1985Gamerforlife wrote:I just kept waiting for something fresh in that game and never got it. I don't know if I should count SMB 2 in the discussion though, as it wasn't a true Mario game(Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic )

Well since this has devolved into yet another obligatory Nintendo fanboy discussion, rather than an actual discussion of all games and gaming platforms... I officially

Aw, come on chief. Don't be like that. The thread went dead for a little bit, and then got revived because the OP posted a couple of other lists. If it makes you feel any better, I was working on a list of 1001 games, though I admit that I shelved the project a bit to focus on work until the end of the year.cha cha wrote:Well since this has devolved into yet another obligatory Nintendo fanboy discussion, rather than an actual discussion of all games and gaming platforms...
