It's actually pretty easy; the two fast fish improve his condition while the two slow fish hurt his condition. Additionally, talking to him will reset the fish available and slightly lower his condition. So the general procedure is to grab the fast fish, and if there's no fast fish you talk to him to reset (as that hurts him less than feeding him a slow fish).
Though it's certainly not the same as sacrificing, you can beat the game without collecting every character in the World of Ruin. I have never done this though.
I've done a Celes/Edgar/Setzer run before. What got exciting was when I transitioned to Kefka; the previous boss in the chain had used a instant-death counter move on death so it transitioned before I could revive, which meant it was Setzer v. Kefka. He was the only one with instant death protection (Celes was Gem Box Economizer, Edgar was Genji Glove Offering).

I'm now at the "post-game" of Dragon's Dogma when the game pulls the rug from under your feet. It's a pretty cool reveal all told.
You kill the great dragon and learn that all Arisen's before you failed in their task and choose the dragons bargain. The bargain is that the dragon keeps the Arisen's heart as sacrifice and keeps the forces of hell back. By killing him and breaking the circle you unleash hell on earth. It's kinda biblical.
I've traveled to the Dark Arisen add-on as well, a huge labyrinthine dungeon full of super-powered creatures. Got a real old fashioned dungeon grinder vibe. For capcom it's a pretty full add-on as well. No wonder they put it out as a separate disc.

Arcanum may be my favorite WRPG of all time. It's so dark and creepy and weird. Too bad Troika Games went under after only three RPGs.
Yeah, and I can add dragon warrior 3 to the list as well. Sorry to bother you guys again but I have some other games I'm sizing up wondering if you had any thoughts.
They are: The Last Remnant, Breath of Fire 3 and Granstream Saga.

Last Remnant is just okay..... Kinda slow and clunky. I think it has issues on the Xbox 360 if it's not installed? I can't recall exactly.

Breath of Fire III rules. The (PAL) PSP version is especially great - if you can track that one down (EDIT: oh wait you live in Europe, you can probably find it pretty easily  ). Classic JRPG gameplay.

I have yet to play Granstream Saga, but from what I recall it's related to Soul Blazer/Illusion of Gaia/Terranigma trilogy so you may want to play those first.

Unfortunately I don't have a PSP, but the PS1 version of BoF3 can be had for a reasonable price. If I were get a new console next year it'll be a 3DS most probably.

Legend of Heroes: A Tear of Vermillion

Final boss is 100x harder than any other battle in the game. I hate it when games pull this shit.

Interesting, I've never heard this. What about the PAL version makes it superior?

The PSP port is in English, but it was not released in North America.

^ yeah, that.

The game is PAL or JPN only.

PAL version is actually on Amazon now for $17. Good time to get it.
