Games Beaten 2013:
1. Bioshock Infinite [PC]
2. Demon's Crest [SNES]
3. Sacred Citadel [PC]
4. Dishonored [PC]
5. Bastion [PC]
6. Torchlight 2 [PC]
7. TMNT: Turtles in Time [SNES]
8. Mark of the Ninja [PC]
9. Mega Man X [SNES]
10. Mega Man X2 [SNES]
11. Diablo [PC] *NEW*

After about 20 hours and 16 levels of Hell, I've managed to best the original Diablo. It aged surprisingly well. Despite fairly rigid isometric movement, no item stash, and having to return to town a lot more than I'm used to, I thoroughly enjoyed going back to this old hack-n-slash RPG. I played a Warrior, which meant that fighting ranged attackers could be tricky. For the majority of the more challenging levels of the dungeon, my strategy was simply to lure monsters into choke points, like through door ways and into narrow corridors. This meant they'd just line up and attack me single-file, which helped me get through many more difficult areas.

After playing the other two Diablo games for countless hours, it was interesting to see the roots of the series, and where it all started. Now I'm moving on to Diablo II, which so far is vastly superior in almost every way.

Diablo I and II are amazing. Surprisingly though I always get bored with Diablo II around the half-way mark, despite it being overall vastly superior to the first game, the action gets too repetitive somehow for me. Again, they're still both amazing, and the classes in Diablo II are simply awesome. Definitely look into the skill trees and plan your strategies around them when leveling up/combat; a major thing I love about the sequel. Equipment that boosts certain skills are worth looking out for.

How does it compare to Torchlight if I may ask? It's basically made by the original Diablo team right down to the composer and I'm wondering if it can hold a candle.

The original Torchlight was solid, and I enjoyed it up until the very end when I encountered the last boss who had a completely absurd amount of health. Never ended up beating it simply because defeating him would've taken such a long time. The sequel took everything that made the first one great and improved on it, mostly with the online multiplayer that it so desperately needed.

In comparison to the Diablo games, their core gameplay is very similar, especially the original Torchlight compared to the original Diablo. Both have a central town hub, and send you into one single dungeon that changes its environment and monster types as you descend deeper. However, they're radically different stylistically speaking. Torchlight is much lighter and cartoony, where the Diablo games are dark and violent. I'd highly recommend both if you enjoy hack-n-slash RPG's.

Might try a no-kill run on my next play of MGS.

Rebel Assualt II is hilarious. The in game actors are all awesomely bad and very awkward. The game itself is great if you're a Star Wars fan, but is basically an average rail shooter.

So the Star Wars fighting game kinda stinks, but gets a pass from me as when I was younger I loved the idea of wielding a lightsaber in a sub-par Tekken rip off. It's not The Simpson's Wrestling bad, but it's not good.

Easily one of my favorite games of all time. Of course I know about the HD versions, but I am more than fine with the PS2 original. SOTC does just about everything right to create a legendary atmosphere that is both beautiful and foreboding. I love everything about this game from the concept of only fighting bosses to the mysterious storyline.

It's not perfect, but it's pretty close.

97. Postal 2: Share the Pain (PC)(FPS)
98. Postal 2: Apocalyptic Weekend (PC)(FPS)

Over the weekend I played through both Postal 2 and its expansion pack. The Postal games aren't good games, though they're certainly interesting ones, filling a similar niche to the modern GTA series in terms of societal criticism. Every filthy excess in American society is stretched out to the point of ridiculousness, and all of it is continuously blamed on everyone else. This is a game that exists as a perverse reaction to the opposition against violence and sexuality in video games, to openly declare that yes, video games can be horribly violent, obscenely insensitive, and effectively insulting to anyone and everyone...and that's not a bad thing.

So, how does it work? Well, in Postal 2, you live through the work week of the Postal Dude, Monday through Friday, as he wanders around Paradise, Arizona, finishing his to-do list. It's a pleasant enough place, if you like cannibalism, cacti, corruption, and crack. Also terrorists. And perverted rednecks. And hippie book burners. And so on and so forth. But to do this, PD will wander a relatively open world(connected by specific loading points), which gives the feeling of one continuous location. It's not perfect, and by Postal 2's release, we'd seen something similar in games like Deus Ex, though Deus Ex was a bit more disjointed in its locations as you moved between multiple cities. But each day gives PD the opportunity to fulfill all of his goals in any order he likes, so the game is considerably more open than even some modern open world titles. And players could do everything peacefully if they so desire. It doesn't really fit PD's Go Fuck Yourself And Die attitude, but it is surprising that in a game which glorifies the excess as a means of retaliating against the social culture of the US against video games, the player has the opportunity to not go about senselessly killing.

Postal 2 does feature a splendidly bizarre array of weaponry, items, and means of interacting with the world(by kicking or urinating on it). The actual gunplay feels a bit stiff, and none of the weapons feel particularly powerful beyond the hunting rifle, though there is a sick joy I feel when blasting someone's head off. And the expansion, Apocalyptic Weekend, adds several welcome additions in the melee department, bringing in a machete, sledgehammer, and scythe, which all feel wonderful. Unfortunately the expansion isn't nearly as open-ended and feels more like a traditional corridor-based FPS, and this hurts the game because it allows the flaws to shine through. This is not a game that works when forcing the player to a linear path. It shines with its open-ended nature. And this is not a game that should rely too heavily on its poor gunplay, though hacking the National Guard to pieces with that machete was a real treat.

So, did I enjoy finally playing through Postal 2 and Apocalyptic Weekend(I've previously played the multiplayer with friends)? Yes, very much, but I am a fan of such open world design. Yes, it's crude. Yes, it's offensive. And yes, at times, it's not very good. But I appreciate the ideas it has and how it revels in its own satirical filth.

The farm level is long, which I think may be a turn off for some people. It's probably my favorite stage though, just because I feel that it encapsulates everything that is fun about the game. Plus, it has probably one my favorite boss fights(the other being the first stage of the final boss battle)

I finally did it. I finally beat Ocarina of Time. 14 years, 5 attempts, and four platforms later, I finally finished the game. I still think I'm in the camp that wonders why this game gets so much press when a Link to the Past deserves the real accolades but I can see now a little bit of what made Ocarina so special to so many people.

The implementation of the title on the 3DS really deserves a nod, too. It's not perfect but it's more than serviceable and the controls did not feel truncated at all. The graphics were crazy good considering everything is grafted on top of a 15 year old N64 title.

As 2013 ends, I think I'll be seeing my quest to finish all the Legend of Zelda titles I've never cleared continue. Skyward Sword is next and it should be a nice contrast - the first 3D Zelda game compared with the most recent.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
