Some of his videos are just him talking nonsense for 10 minutes and arbitrarily showing gameplay footage. People eat it up relentlessly though, so I guess I just simply don't understand the humor and appeal.
You're not alone. I don't get that guy either.
It really is nonsensical B.S. with a few random pauses thrown in for effect.
His fan base (I call them worshipers) though is something to behold. They hold the dude up like he's the second coming.
I like CGR, never said he was the be all end all of game reviewers, though. I don't know who "worships" him or holds him up that high. I'd say AVGN is the one gets that kind of praise from his fans.

I think Luke's trying to raise hackles and succeeding.

There's a range of quality for video reviews just as their is with non-video reviews. There are "personalities" in both contexts and recurring problems with both formats. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater, though: there's some good stuff to be found.

Besides, sometimes game-related videos can just be fun for the sake of fun. Other times they have academic merit that might not be apparent. For example "Let's Plays", which are tedious and boring to me, are a great way to preserve gameplay for future research. (e.g. Not everyone can play N64 games easily, so a Let's Play can give them some historical context about something like the differences between PC Doom and Doom64). They aren't my cup of tea, but they are an important part of game culture in their own way.

Fine by me. Make people play the damn game.
Ah, but here's the thing: I use these to inform myself of games I want to purchase. I like to observe the quality of the animation, the music, and the gameplay. Sure, I'll play the damn game once I own it, but I'd kinda like to see the damn game before I buy it.

If this is considered to be good, I would hate to see what bad looks like.

Hey, here is a game. Look at it as I talk mindlessly.
I agree that CGR really isn't that interesting.

But the surplus of crappy gaming vids and the complete shittification of GoogleTube are two separate issues.

I don't want to see CGR taken down because this type of thing doesn't bode well for good videos either. Or videos in general. And it slaps Fair Use right in the nuts.

This also makes me wonder if things like movie trailers will be pulled as well.

Not really.

Online video game "reviews" lack the "review" part. I don't need to watch some butt breath play a game for twelve minutes to not tell me why or why not the game apparently "sucks". I don't even need to see game footage* from the so called reviewer to get a clear review. All I want is a review written succinctly and with a sprinkle of insight.

*In fact, like a newspaper movie review, I'd rather not see any of the product. The reviewer's job is to convince you whether or not something is worth your time and money, not to just display the material.

Actually, I don't think either of these things is the reviewer's job in any context...

Thumb down.

But that isn't the reviewer's job, is it?

It is truly beyond me what would urge someone to make a 30+ minute video about a game that has probably been reviewed a thousand times, talking about the same old stuff that everyone has discussed to death already for 15 years. To top it off, the only people that would bother watching such a long and self gratuitous video about the game, are people that already know everything about the game and what he's talking about in the first place, which makes even less sense to me. People new to the game that want a review before checking it out sure as hell aren't going to watch some guy drone on for 30 minutes about it.
