I was shooting for the same number this year myself but things have fallen off a bit the last 6 weeks or so. I will do some cramming the last 3 weeks of the year and see if I can't at least get to 90

Looks like you'll hit 100 pretty handily, Ack! Congrats!

Congrats. That game is very, very difficult to beat. Like, give me twenty plays and I might be able to beat it once difficult. That first rooftop battle where you are in an all out battle against around five bosses (one of which that can kill you with one touch if I remember correctly) is a life drainer.Ack wrote: 95. But the game does a great job of walking through the series of comics that made Maximum Carnage such a fun read.
Re: Games Beaten 2013
Originally I wasn't planning on it, but once I got into the 70s, I began thinking about it. 5 games to go in three weeks...I think I can do it, though the games are gonna end up being things like The Adventures of Dr. Franken.dsheinem wrote:Looks like you'll hit 100 pretty handily, Ack! Congrats!

Yeah, more than once I ended up shouting and swearing in frustration. But once I figured out how to use the superheroes and what they did, the game became considerably easier. Fighting Shriek and Doppleganger? Black Cat will take out half their life and knock them down. Firestar nearly kills Demogoblin and knocks him off his glider, and when he stands up, you can immediately jumpkick him to finish him off. Carrion isn't a threat when he is alone, you just have to line up to hit him. And Carnage basically drops any time you use Spider-Man or Venom with the sonic gun. Through judicious use of superheroes, the repetitive threat of these guys is knocked out. I admit that I also learned the locations of a couple of secret rooms, which helped keep me going, and once I figured out the repetitive means of beating that Fantastic Four guardbot, he was easy but time consuming. The hardest part of the game, at least to me, is dealing with Carnage at the end. I beat that fight through judicious abuse of power moves and constantly moving around Carnage whenever he would pop in to attack.Luke wrote:Congrats. That game is very, very difficult to beat. Oh, and when you're getting swarmed by regular enemies, such as the four redcoat guys in Piedmont Park, Cloak is a one-hit KO on everyone on the screen AND reveals the location of health items. He really helped in those tough jams.

Good to know. I eagerly await the day my little girl can play video games. Well, she does occasionally play with a Namco plug n play - she likes the joystick.prfsnl_gmr wrote:Moreover, the game's lack of challenge makes it a great game to play through with young children, and a great way to introduce them to some of the beloved heroes of your childhood. (My four-year-old daughter loved this game, and she is now obsessed with all DC superheroes. She was a bit distressed that Wonder Woman did not make a cameo appearance, however.)
Funny how sometimes those random games that look like shovelware or cheap cash-ins turn out to be lots of fun.
Oh, and Ack - by any chance do you like SNES games?

Just a tad. I've only beaten 53 this year so far.BoneSnapDeez wrote:Oh, and Ack - by any chance do you like SNES games?

Injustice: Gods Among Us - Wii U
This one was a bit of a double edged sword for me. I really liked the game and it's engine. It was smooth, looked decent enough and had a large variety of charters. The story mode was pretty interesting and kept me playing, much like MK9, the creator make the story mode in fighting games really entertaining.
My main issue with the game is the special moves. Rather than do the 'normal' thing and have a set list of moves that you apply to a different button for a low, medium, high version of that move they decided that to do different button combos for each low medium and high.
So if applied to Street Fighter, while quarter circle forward LOW might throw a Hadouken quarter circle forward MEDIUM might throw a spinning kick and quarter circle forward HIGH might do nothing. It makes learning new characters and even just playing more tedious than it has to be.
New SUPER MARIO BROS. U - Wii U
I have beaten Bowser twice before, once by myself and once with a friend of mine who I played through COOP. However yesterday I finally collected the last of the Star Coins, which was a bit of a challenge and quickly found the last flagpole I was missing to hit that 5th star and 100% the game, which I now consider finished.
I really enjoyed my time with the game, like everything Nintendo put out it was really polished and was easy to play, but hard to master. It obviously only appeals to certain type of gamer these days and lucky for me I am that type.
Like always, amazing level design that when you die you only have yourself to blame. They did not shake up the formula very much, but they stuck with what they knew and they did it really well.

Picked up Starcraft II during Black Friday. Was worth the $20. I'm not great at multiplayer RTS, but I do enjoy "use map settings" maps or "Arcade" as it's now known. Overall, I enjoyed the story, gameplay, and new units, and don't mind that Starcraft II was broken up into three segments for the story.
I can't say that I ever really played much of the original on the NES, but this was a fun platformer. I wish the cutscenes were a little easier to skip, but it was some good nostalgia from the TV show.

...nah.
So Axelay is an odd one. When I first picked it up, I was impressed by its visuals, but I really disliked it. But I figured I would really sit down and delve into it, and now I find I really enjoy it! I just really don't like the first level. Really, it's my least favorite level. Everything after that is great. The hori levels are interesting and well designed, with some incredible moments, such as Axelay taking on an armada at the beginning of the final level. The vert levels are visually spectacular, though I don't really like them as much. The use of mode 7 is amazing, but it gives me some issues with perspective. That said, it makes for some incredible boss fights. The lava giant is one of the most impressive visuals I've seen in a SNES SHMUP. It's a shame he is one of the easiest bosses in the game.
There's also a lot of variety in weaponry in Axelay, though the base weapons at the beginning of the game are some of the most useful, particularly the circular shot which starts behind and spins to the fore. That was easily my favorite weapon in the game and the one I got the most use out of. There's also missiles, which I went ahead and configured to the same button as my regular weapons, so I fired everything at the same time. That made for some impressive salvos against my enemies.
Of the SNES SHMUPS I've beaten(U.N. Squadron, Super R-Type, Super Earth Defense Force, and now Axelay), I find this one the most impressive, and beyond that first level, probably the one that I enjoyed the most. As for that level...I think it's all of the dodging of the rocks. Like I said, those perspective issues hurt the experience, and to be forced to face it so blatantly at the beginning kept me from sitting down with this one for several years. I'm glad I go past it, because this is a wonderful game.
