Retro Gamer Magazine

This magazine is freaking amazing! I love it! I picked up my first issue last month, and just got the current issue today. It's soooo chock full of retro-gaming greatness. Awesome in-depth articles. It has full color, glossy pages and photos. It's pretty dang thick for a magazine, and it's oversized; so you get a ton of content for your money.

But even better, is that it's British. So even though I already know a ton about retro-gaming, I still find myself actually learning a bit about the machines that were popular in Europe but not so much in the U.S.

I so recommend getting this one to everyone at this website.

While we're on the subject: Why does it seem that the U.K. has so many just incredibly awesome magazines, while our magazines over here just suck?

Metal Hammer is another Brit magazine that knocks the crap out of any metal magazine printed in the U.S. Same deal as Retro Gamer: Great articles, big oversized and thick magazine so plenty of content, full glossy color pages and photos, etc., etc. And even better with it is that every issue has an about 15-song length sampler CD chock full of metal bands' latest releases. It's worth the price of admission for that alone.

Unfortunately, because they are British, they're $9.99 a pop. And subscription fees are freaking outrageous for Americans. I wish they'd make an imprint over here, or a magazine maker here would make a magazine that's actually cool.

Yeah I love Retro Gamer. I don't buy them often, due to that high import price.

The British perspective is interesting. Last year they had an amazing C64/ZX Spectrum retrospective.

I love the big combined issues that take the monthly articles on certain consoles and put them all together in a big issue. I had the first two then my dog decided to eat the spines when they were sitting on the coffee table, volume two was not readable and volume 1 looks pretty haggard.

Stopped buying them after that, would love if they ran them again.

However as they are imports they cost a fair bit, could get a cheap game for the same price.

I've been a big fan of Retro Gamer for years now, although I mostly buy the digital copies of the issues now to avoid import costs. My favorite articles from them are when they do retrospectives of entire platforms. They're very informative and fun to read.

Anyone interested in Retro Gamer Magazine owes it to themselves to peruse the thread over at neo-geo.com about the Metal Slug feature.

Classic.

Only read the first post, but I generally agree with the OP so far in that thread; seems like reasonable criticism. Also, something about that site's color scheme hurts my eyes.

edit: oh, I SEE, reading a bit more... haha.

What is the best deal on this magazine? I'm aware of the digital copies for around $50 a year on Zinio, but is there anything better?

I've heard just nothing but good things about his.

I've been buying this magazine since about issue 62 (it had Bomberman on the cover I think) and have only missed one issue since, which was about issue 82, and had Afterburner on the cover. If anyone has a copy of that they fancy selling me it'd be much appreciated.

It's a pretty great read, although I'm pretty behind on my copies right now. I shopuld sit down and read all the way through all the recent issues I've only scanned through.
