I have been using a .cdi file, burning it at like 10x speed or something. Not actually sure how i'd go about booting it as a self booting image, but since it's not yesterday anymore i'm going to assume i did (?).
Part of me is now worried that it's a post 2000 DC which wont let you use boot disks

What software did you use?
It could be that the console doesn't accept burns but I've never come across one before.
If it was me I'd try a different image. Use Padus Discjuggler just to be hundred percent sure that it's burning correctly. If that doesn't work, try a different brand of media. If none of those work then the only other option to getting import games to boot would be to get a mod chip.
I'd just get a new DC if none of the above works though. Probably cheaper and less hassle than getting a mod chip.
