Refurbished 360's ........stay away from them or there ok ?

Post by s8n »

hi members , i was wondering if second hand 360's that have been refurbished are not a good thing to buy ?

obviously the overheating problem and red ring is the main reason a 360 will need to be refurbished , after its been repaired if i use excellent cooling methods such as 12 Volt fan mod.........will the rrod still occur ?

or when its rrod before its just going to keep happening regardless of proper cooling ?

Buy a Slim or the current model.

Better cooling could perhaps prevent RRoD issues from happening, but for standard usage the newer models are simply better each revision. Not all of the old style ones even have HDMI, and HDD size increases over time. Plus Slims and on have integrated WiFi.

RRoD happens due to solder joints breaking. Clamping things together and/or hoping things melt back can see it work for a while, but it's not a great fix. With the cost of reballing, simply going to the newer revisions that don't have the issues in the first place makes more sense.

hi isiolia.............

Buy a Slim or the current model.

i would get Slims but i use xk3y's and dumping the DVD Drive key is a dog , with Jasper's ( phat ) its as simple as probing the DVD Drive PCB with a Probe.

i want Jaspers for that reason and Jaspers are great for low heat and the Motherboard is detectable from the Manufacture Date and Power connection at the back of the Console

If the console has been reballed (lead solder) it should be able to last 10+ years no problem. The issue with the xbox360s is the fact that they use a non lead tin base solder. This has a much lower melting point then lead. With that it heats up and slowly pools over time with that there heat stress from thermal expansion and retraction. This causes a problem known as cold solder links, they happen from the thermal expantsion heats up and grows the area slightly and after time when cooled it will just break off and loose connection.

So basiclly any xbox360 you buy has a play life of 2-4 years with this issue but very small amounts might last longer with different factors. If you looking for one to last for a long time shell out the cash for a proper reball (make sure its done with lead based) and then you shouldn't have problems for quite a long time. OR but a referb I've got 1-3 years out of referbs my self.

Still have an original elite running up stairs. Would definitely recommend getting a newer slim though.

Only reason mine has survived this long is probably thanks to the intercooler I have on it 24/7. It has actually gone through two of the Nyko coolers :P fan blades literally shattered on the first one after a year of constant use :P.

A friend sold me his that was formerly broken. He modded it for me to play back-ups

His other friends are pretty good at fixing bad 360s. They do the same and resell them locally.

I really dont know what he did to this one or if it RRoD. But its been going good these past three months.

One thing my friend told me, and its the version i have; is that the last consoles before the slim were made pretty good.

They have a built in HDMI port right above the av port. Which model this is exactly, i dont know.

I really dont know much about 360's so look into what I posted. Maybe its true?

i use Talismoon on my current Jasper 360 and have 6 more Talismoons in a box unopened , i made a product review here at RB forums some time ago you may want to check it out.

also ive seen a Youtube video off a guy pressing the Nitro Switch on a Talismoon and the heat dropped like crazy , he has some sort of custom dash which displays temps.

the last of the phats were Jaspers , they run cooler than previous models due to redesigning the processor/s.
