January:
-Mass Effect (360)
-New Super Mario Bros U (WiiU)

February:
-Mass Effect 2 (360)

March:
-Kirby's Dream Land (Gameboy)
-Punch Out!! (Wii)

August:
- Fire Emblem: Awakening (3DS)

September:
- Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance (GCN)
- Megaman 3 (NES)

October:
- Victorious Boxers Revolution (Wii)
- Super Mario Land 3D (3DS)
- New Super Mario Bros 2 (3DS)

November:
- The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD (WiiU)

December:
[/b]- The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (3DS)[/b]

Year's wrapping up and I don't see this list getting much longer. A couple of thoughts about the Zelda games Nintendo has released this fall/winter:

Wind Waker HD feels, to me, to be the game that the artists had in mind when they made it back in the early 2000's. I didn't really notice the graphical upgrade - if I compared the two versions side by side I'm sure I would but the new graphics really just make the game look as polished as I remember the original to be. The most important thing is the no-bullshit interface that makes the adventure positively joyous. Not having to fumble with menus or constantly toggle maps made me much more willing to take my time and explore. I think I interacted with twice as much of the game's content this time than I ever did back when I first played it in 2006.

I don't think I can say enough about A Link Between Worlds. The most important thing to note, without spoiling anything for anyone hoping to get this for the holidays, is that this game could very well point the way to the Zelda series making some serious strides in gameplay design and story telling. For the first time since (coincidentally) A Link to the Past, I honestly cared about the world I was in and the people in it. Nothing in the plot was thrown away and every person you meet and place you see remains relevant all the way until the end. To call this the best Zelda game released in decades is not hyperbole.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

31. *NEW* Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Double Agent - Gamecube (December 7)

My yearlong adventure of the Splinter Cell series on the Gamecube has come to a conclusion. All four beaten in 2013.

This one took what made Chaos Theory the best and made it even better, through the use of choosing which side you wanted Sam to be a part of - his employers at Echelon or the terrorist cell he was sent in to infiltrate, the JBA. Through a special Trust Meter, the objectives in each mission you could complete would help the sides of good and evil, and each one would send you a certain direction. Special "opposing" objectives, in which you had a choice to do either right or wrong (example: kill an important witness to further the JBA's cause or spare him so that Echelon can interrogate him) branched the story into a different path. If your meter slides too far to one side, you would have to do additional missions to prove your loyalty to the other side. Also, your equipment loadout would be different for each new mission depending on what side you leaned towards in the previous mission. It added a whole new dimension to the experience, and once again the story and the writing shine. It's no wonder this series is still continuing today.

It's already on my list, but I beat Sonic The Hedgehog with all the chaos emeralds without losing a life last night. Believe I had fourteen lives remaining. I believe it was the first time my wife had watched the entire game, and she really enjoyed it.

And this too: http://postimg.org/image/5hrdiqal9/

I'll easily beat something else by the end of the year and hit 50... woo! Crazy for me, not to mention throw in some long RPG's in there, replays, and a few games I got the platinum trophies for.

Ratchet & Clank Up Your Arsenal is another one for the platinum list. Great game, but I'm not sure which I favor between this or Going Commando. I would say this one easily had the better story/characters and main villain, more Qwerk is a huge plus too, and the controls were perfected at this point so everything felt really smooth and refined. But the gameplay was different. more linear, more about shooting, and less exploration. But again... the controls were so damn good by this point and it was fun, probably had the best guns too. Going Commando had more platforming and exploration, which I liked a lot though. It had cooler worlds I think too, although Up Your Arsenal had the best music by far, some really cool tunes in there.

Overall a great... well I'd say 2nd/3rd games here, glad I finally got around to these and I'm pretty excited to check out the PS3 titles now. Now I can get back to more Sly and see how they stack up, and check out Jak sometime.

Two thumbs up for Going Commando and Up Your Arsenal.

Was the Earthworm Jim artist involved in this series at all? The Captain Qwark vid comic image is pretty much straight up Earthworm Jim, loved it.

26. Tomb Raider(2013)(PC) 12/8/13

Battlefield 4 had a pretty solid single player. Story still could have used some work but was much better then BF3. Gun play was what you would expect from a modern shooter and the variety of guns was good. Only things I didn't really care for was the ending which was pretty weak no matter which of the 3 choices you picked at the end(should have been 4 but I guess they thought the obvious one they left out was cliche :P). Finally the game was very kill happy with every chapter having at least 1 person from your immediate party die.
They also connected BF3 and BF4 with a character that pops up midway through but he/she lasts all of one mission making his cameo kind of pointless.
Tomb Raider was also very good but felt a hell of a lot like uncharted. Story was decent but it just didn't have the tomb raider mojo that I am used to and the tombs weren't to exciting. Also found the game surprisingly easy once you mastered the bow especially since there is no shortage of arrows laying around and one of your first skills(which really shouldn't even need to be earned) is the ability to retrieve arrows from corpses.

Edit: forgot I had finished Saints Row 4. SR4 really disappointed me. It had its moments but overall doesn't hold a candle to SR3. The story was pretty meh and the super powers completely broke the game. Key bindings also sucked for swapping super powers.

2 new games this time, and both of them are portable remakes of classic retro video games.

Have you ever played Castlevania: Rondo of Blood? Dracula X Chronicles is basically that, but from what I've heard, not quite as good. The graphics arent as nice, being rather brown and blocky 2.5d graphics (that said, they still look OK in motion), and from my understanding a few of the platforms are very slightly differently placed. That said, the game is still very enjoyable - it's fluid and challenging, but not frustratingly so, and the music is a real treat. This PSP version features the original Rondo of Blood as an unlockable too, alongside it's sequel, the classic Symphony of the Night - both of those will have to join this list at another time though. As my first traditional Castlevania game (the only other one I've played is Order of Ecclesia), I very much enjoyed my time with this one. Pretty happy with my purchase!

Have you ever played Kirby's Adventure? Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland is basically that, but a little prettier. As a remake of a game I've played through before (I have the NES game on Wii VC) this game didn't offer a lot that was new to me, but was still a very enjoyable little romp. The graphics in the game are pretty much the same as in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, and they look really nice, and the music sounds good for a GBA game too. Coming back to Kirby's Adventure style gameplay was a little tough now though - when I played Adventure for the first time back in 2006 or 2007 or so, it was pretty much my first kirby game, and so the simple attack selection wasn't a big downside to me. Having since played lots of Kirby games with many more powers, such as Dreamland 3, or attack options such as Superstar and Kirbys Adventure Wii, it felt a little limited now. Luckily the Sword and Hammer powers still feel great, mainly because you can use them without losing momentum, so I generally used those where I could. The levels here are identical, the only new content really is the new mini games, which were OK, but I think I preferred the Dedede egg and bomb game from the NES version a little more. Overall, I'd recommend either version of this game to anyone, and wouldnt really pick one of the other - this one is better aesthetically, but its such a small thing that either is a great pick. Still a nice, simple & fun game to blast through anytime.

Next up: I accidentally played through half of Perfect Dark over the weekend, so I hope to finish that in the next 2 weeks. After that, I'll see what short games I can fit in before the new game barrage on the 24th (my birthday) and 25th (apparently some other important day? )

24. Batman: Arkham Asylum (PS3)
25. Batman: The Brave & The Bold (DS)
26. Batman: The Brave & The Bold (Wii)

I recently completed Batman: The Brave & The Bold for both the Nintendo DS and the Nintendo Wii - they are completely different games, BTW - and I heartily recommend both of them.

First, Batman: The Brave & The Bold for the Nintendo DS is a 2D, sprite-based action game designed by WayForward and based on the blue-and-grey, "Adam West" Batman of the 1960s and '70s. (That is, he is a lot less "Dark Knight" and a lot more "Caped Crusader"...) WayForward's excellent sprite work is on full display in this game, which - to me at least - draws a lot of inspiration from The Adventures of Batman & Robin (SNES) and some of Treasure's best work on the Sega Genesis. Broken into episodes and true to the original The Brave & The Bold comic book, each level finds Batman teaming up with a different superhero from the DC Universe to foil a (sometimes c-list) supervillain's plot. Each of Batman's partners has unique abilities that must be used in tandem with Batman's abilities to complete the level and defeat the game's plentiful bosses. I enjoyed the game thoroughly, but for anyone considering it, I must want them that: (1) given its target audience, it lacks anything resembling challenge; and (2) it can be completed very quickly. Accordingly, I recommend this game highly to anyone who is looking for a game for (or to play with) their children or anyone who wants a easy and short, but nonetheless well-crafted 2D action game. Those seeking lenghty, challenging games should pass on this title, and unless you are a Batman fanatic or are purchasing it for a child, you should not spend more than a few dollars on this game.

Batman: The Brave & The Bold for the Wii is similar to the Nintendo DS title in that is another beautifully crafted game 2D action game by WayForward. Likewise, the game finds Batman teaming up with another super hero from the DC Universe in each of its episodes, and it also contains a plethora of exciting boss fights. (The fight against The Rogues - Captain Cold, Heatwave, and The Weather Wizard - and the fight against Starro are particularly memorable.) The game contols very differently from the Nintendo DS game, however, and each episode of the game is filled with charming, witty, character-building dialogue that plays throughout the game and blends seemlessly with the dialogue triggered by certain commands. As a result, each of the game's levels plays out like an episode of the television show, and it is entertaining - even for spectators - from beginning to end. Unfortunately, this game also lacks anything resembling a challenge, and while it is much longer than the DS game, it is over way too quickly. That said, the game is designed to be a two-player cooperative experience, and it therefore has a lot of the replay value inherent in old-fashioned two-player beat-'em-ups. Moreover, the game's lack of challenge makes it a great game to play through with young children, and a great way to introduce them to some of the beloved heroes of your childhood. (My four-year-old daughter loved this game, and she is now obsessed with all DC superheroes. She was a bit distressed that Wonder Woman did not make a cameo appearance, however.)

Super Turrican is awesome! It's a gorgeous game, featuring a wide variety of levels with varying themes, with some great music and solid controls. For me, the big thing has got to be the level design of this game: some of these levels are straight-forward, and some are massive and maze-like but very, very deadly and absolutely gorgeous. There are unfortunately a few portions that feel unfairly frustrating, though these are thankfully few and far between. There is a learning curve in the game, especially where the rolling crouch ability is best used, but once the proper weapon has been selected and the mechanics internalized, the game becomes incredibly fun. Even then, there is a definite challenge to the game, and the challenge continues to ramp. Also, there are some massive and wonderful boss fights, though they tend not to be as difficult as the levels leading up to them. The final boss in particular is nowhere near as tough as the Aliens-themed level leading up to him.

Maximum Carnage though...I have mixed feelings. Graphically I've seen much worse in the genre for the SNES, though I think the game's mediocre in its gameplay. Not so with its comic panels, which I adore. But the base and bland enemy sprites detract from all the superheroes moving around. And there are quite a few superheroes to find throughout the game. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of variety in villains, with the same five bosses repeated ad nauseam (Doppleganger, Shriek, Demogoblin, Carrion, and Carnage), and generally they don't change much between fights. Only Shriek really modifies how she fights, and it is to overly abuse her vertical strike. There is the legendary Fantastic Four robot boss, though once I figured out the trick (stick to wall, drop down, punch once, jump on wall, rinse, repeat), that just became repetitive and dull. The final two-part Carnage fight is the real doozy for me. He's fast and has a lot of moves...which is one of the places where the game really shines. Spider-Man and Venom have a lot of moves and a lot of sprites to represent them, just as Carnage does. Doppleganger also has a solid bit of maneuvers to pull off. And the controls work very well. This is perhaps the first beat 'em up where I thought it was too easy to throw my enemies! Though that doesn't necessarily make things easier, as it locks your character in place and gives the cheap enemy AI a chance to get in a couple of hits. Finally there is the massive number of superheroes to call, including the likes of Black Cat, Cloak, Dagger, Iron Fist, Captain America, Firestar, so on and so forth, each and with their own musical cues and varying abilities. These guys make the game much, much easier and can almost destroy the bosses if used effectively. As far as SNES-era Marvel games go, this one is good(especially when compared to the likes of Spider-Man and the X-Men in Arcade's Revenge and the SNES Wolverine: Adamantium Rage port), though it gets blown away by the likes of X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse and Marvel Super Heroes: War of the Gems.
