EA originally started with those carts for licensing purposes to get around Sega's fees. Sega pitched a huge fit and brought them to court. Sega lost. EA continued on making games, now licensed. Because they were known for their strange shaped carts they continued using them.
or so the rumour has been for over a decade now.
The only "proof" of it I've ever located is on the internet, and is never a notable source.
Why do some genesis games look different?

Man,didn't we hear different accounts of how that played out.Still the same cause(EA cheaping out on the fees) but very different effects.

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.

I think it's interesting how the EA carts are a bit narrower in addition to being taller. I guess it's a good thing, since it means we can have universal game cases that fit EA carts with standard Genny carts.

I think this is the closest to the reality. Usually I also read that because of that "fight" over this stuff EA didn't support the Saturn or the DC much, which "forced" Sega to have their own sports line.lordofduct wrote:EA originally started with those carts for licensing purposes to get around Sega's fees. Re: Why do some genesis games look different?
Yeah I read somewhere that they abandond the saturn because basically they were unhappy about paying sega a licencing fee and the way that sega generally treated them although sega did demand less control than ninetendo did at the time.
I always hated the EA carts because they didnt fit the slot properly and its too easy to insert/remove the cart at an angle which will eventually destroy the pin connector in the console. I cant remember how well the codemaster carts fit.
Also, the boxes are slightly different size and shape, which is enough of an annoyance with a collection of pal games, but then you throw in a few genesis versions which arent all the same size from the same damn publisher and its more than I can take.

At least the 4 player Codemasters carts had J-Cart. That one of the best things about the Megadrive. Being able to play 4-player Micro Machines without needed additional adaptors was great.

That game is for Master System. The actual Megadrive version was released on an unlicensed two-in-one cart. I don't remember what the other game was... I think it was one of the Dizzy games, I can't remember exactly though.
