Vita - Worth it Without a PS4/PS3?

Post by marlowe221 »

Does the Vita stand pretty well alone or would I be missing out on a lot of functionality if I got one but don't own a PS4 or a PS3?

I'd say it's worth it. In fact, without a PS3 you might even say that it looks like a better portable since a lot of people complain that a lot of the games are also available on PS3.

But really, it depends on your tastes. I say the Vita is worth it just for Project DIVA games and Persona 4 Golden. Are there Vita games that interest you?

Well, a critical mass of games is slowly building up that interest me on the system. Ys, Dragon's Dogma, Soul Sacrifice, Muramasa Rebirth looks cool...

Do I need one of the over-priced memory cards to play the physical release games?

Without a memory card the Vita is pretty much a paper weight. You could always start with a 8gb and buy a bigger one later on. If you plan on really using your Vita I recommend getting a 64gb. Some of the patches are a gb in themselves. For instance the Killzone multiplier patch.

I have a Vita and a PS 3 and I use them both separately. I haven't delved into any of the Vita's PS 3 based features and have still gotten a lot of use from it

Whether or not you need a memory card kind of depends on the game. I think some save to cartridge and some don't. You don't need a 64gb card. They're ridiculously overpriced. I've done alright with a 16gb

Also, I would suggest ebay or craigslist for a Vita. Retail prices on Vitas are still pretty ridiculous, but you can find good deals from ebay or craigslist sellers if you're lucky. It's crazy the disparity in prices I've seen between those places and actual retail sites.

The 64GB Vita card isn't even available in the US yet. I mean, importing is obviously an option, but I would wait.

If you're going digital only then 64GB would be worth it. If you're getting mainly physical games then I'd still suggest 16GB or so. There were some great deals you missed during the Black Friday week on the memory cards.

I've done a mix of digital and physical and my 16gb is filling up quick and like I said, only if you're really going to use it. Otherwise a 32gb would do.

The release of Ys: Memories of Celceta was kind of the tipping point for me, the beginning of the end.

It's all Bonesnapdeez's fault. He turned me on to the series....

Definitely worth it. So much.

I have a 16GB card very nearly filled up with games from the PS+ Instant Game Collection I downloaded to my PS3 in the months before I got a Vita. They've given away some pretty great games on PS+, including must-haves like Gravity Rush, Wipeout, and BlazBlue Extend.

I plan on going physical when a cart is available - used physical games are usually cheaper than digital ones, and they can be resold. A good idea for sure. But some of the most interesting Vita games are/will be digital only, so be prepared to download a lot too!

It's not like you have to keep all your digital games on the card though. Once you're done with one, just upload your save data, or back it up to a PS3, PS4, or PC, then delete the application.

Definitely worth it. So much. For me, the "critical mass" is already here. There's more than enough to keep me entertained for the next year.
