It is really rare times when some one comes in the store and he says "I know nothing about this " . I understand some added information was given to him by research team of the show about certain items, but most of the time he seems like he knows what he is talking about.
I think you answered your own question.
THIS. The show is not live either, makes me wonder sometimes if it is scripted. When a so called expert is called in, usually the item is devalued to help in the purchase. I love both Pawn Stars and American Pickers for seeing all the unusual items but don't the idiots bringing stuff in realize they can sell it for a lot more off the camera some where else!? If anything I would mark it up knowing the show itself makes a huge profit through the History Channel commercials.
I would like to believe that everything he says on the show is researched for him, but when you look at the store they really do own a variety of items which makes me think they actually know about this stuff, and I doubt the History Channel bought all the items in their store just to give it an authentic feeling.
My favourite character is the old man, and my favourite experts are probably the guy that restores old items (mostly Coca Cola refrigerators) and the car mechanic , which both got their own shows.
My friend has a theory that the experts lie about the value of the items to Rick only to make a deal with the seller outside the doors of the pawn shop
that one chick they hired year before last ,olivia, they had to end up firing cause she posed for suicide girls. i guess the history channel frowned upon that, but read the toy guy expert got arrested for beating his wife. after google imaging her, not to bad.

Aw, come on. I would have watched if I had known she was a Suicide Girl. Those chicks are hot.

The transactions on the show are staged.
I've mentioned this before, but it deserves to be said again; I have a friend who works with Mtv Productions, and a friend who almost won America's Got Talent. Both said the same thing, "Don't believe any of it".
My buddy "Scooterman" Don had a bmx team on AGTalent and he heard things from producers including "It would be in your best interest to cry during this interview" and to "play up the life struggles his team has dealt with with".
And the kids on Mtv will do about anything to get a spot on just about any of their shows. I like to think the first Real World was real, but ya never know.
Almost all Reality TV is staged. For example there is that overplayed scene when the Pickers go up to the guys house and he tells them "you are wasting my time" and throws the paper at the camera. Well he had to sign a release form to be used on TV, so why was he wasting their time then but not to sign the form? Now alot of stuff that happens on that show is not staged, and you can tell because they are actually shocked that they found something or when something happens. But the bulk of these shows are either staged or even scripted.
I use to dayplay on a show where we traveled to flea markets and bought things to sell online for charity. And while alot of it was interactions with people were real, we had scouters go around find or place items for the talent to find and prep the sellers (they dont even acknowledge the cameras are there). The talent was the director so he knew what to look for... But half the time they found other stuff they liked more and it was noticeably different than when they bought the planned items.
