Tomb Raider Underworld not looking too hot

Post by Gamerforlife »

I was ranting a little about it in another thread, but I might as well make a thread for it. Seems like I do a lot of ranting these days. I'm starting to feel like Yahtzee

The buzz on some forums has not been that great. I played the demo and wasn't impressed at all. My first encounter with those tigers was pretty lame. You pretty much can't avoid getting hit and it's pretty much the same combat we've seen in Legend and Anniversary. With this being the first truly next-gen Tomb Raider, I expected something a little more ambitious. Tomb Raider's combat is really starting to feel dated. You hold down the trigger button, take a bunch of hits, use a health pack or two, move on. Lazy, uninspired and just plain pathetic. Plus, they changed the cool adrenaline dodge from Anniversary which worked beautifully in that game.

Supposedly, animals are faster and more aggressive in Underworld, though Lara seems completely unchanged except for the new, useless melee attacks. That's lame. Sounds like the combat may actually be a step backwards from Anniversary. Also, what's with these fierce tigers just knocking Lara down over and over again. You'd think they'd be trying to maul her and rip her apart once she's on the ground. Lots of realism there  I guess more aggressive enemies just means, "we'll knock her down a bunch of times, then wait politely for her to get back up". For a series that prides itself on atmosphere, it's amazing how pathetically non-immersive and unrealistic combat is. We've seen practically zero improvement in this area since Tomb Raider 1 on the original Playstation. It's starting to get old, particularly when paired against the sound combat systems in the Prince of Persia series.

The camera was awful. It zooms in on Lara for no reason at times and apparently there are fewer instances of the camera showing you the way now, which means more leaps of faith in a series already full of them. Seems like the camera has gotten WORSE than past games. During the demo it just got spastic at times. I've heard the game has some bugs/gltiches too, which is pretty typical of Tomb Raider games.

Damn, had my hopes up. Oh well, I'm putting all my hope on Prince of Persia. The new game looks great and unlike the TR series, Prince of Persia games are always evolving and forward thinking, like the awesome platform/stealth hybrid gameplay they had in Two Thrones and now the cool new Elika system(and she's looking much more useful and less in the way than that idiot who followed you around in Sands of Time). I'll give Mirror's Edge a shot too, even though the controls aren't comfortable. Tomb Raider's officially dead to me. Third time should have been the charm. Next-gen Tomb Raider my ass

I was about to come into this thread very defensive. But that was only because I read the thread title and not the post.

The game is the same ol same ol, but it definitely looks hot (maybe the only thing going for it).

Yeah...it's....good, I just think Tomb Raider should be better than good at this point. You might enjoy it despite my complaints. It's just that as someone who has played quite a few TR games, I think I'm tired of the lack of evolution. I mean Crystal Dynamics managed to fix the sluggish controls and tough platforming of the Playstation 1 days, but the combat is still ancient and boring and the camera issues still make some of the platforming annoying. I feel that Crystal Dynamics has gotten complacent, which was what killed the series the first time(before Crystal Dynamics came onboard)

If you don't mind that stuff, it might be for you. I'm just getting a bit jaded with the series. Tomb Raider needs to grow up. The combat is what bugs me the most. If they are not going to make it better, then just remove it from the series entirely. Just focus on trap dodging, puzzles and exploration. I hate seeing any aspect of a game half assed, which is what Crystal Dynamics is doing with the combat. You don't see the Prince of Persia series getting away with that, so why should Tomb Raider?

It's funny to me, because ALL of Tomb Raider's advertising focuses on Lara Croft being a badass action hero and she is in actuality as far away from that as possible. She's got no moves, no skill, nothing. She just gets through battles by firing wildly and using med packs over and over to make up for the ass kicking she receives in every battle from unavoidable attacks, unavoidable bullets, etc, etc. Just wish the designers would show some damn creativity. This is supposed to be her NEXT GEN debut. Sigh, lazy fucks

Okay rant over

I found the tigers pretty easy, jump off of them, flip in the air to face them while running away. Then jump onto a platform, doing a backflip off of it while shooting them to finish them off. I thought he movements and animations were pretty smooth too.

Oh god, I agree whole heartedly. I'm currently playing through SoT for the first time and I'm utterly appalled at how stupid the A.I. is. She keeps shooting me with arrows and is a complete burden because she can't handle herself without getting owned constantly. On more than a few occasions she even stood in front of an enemy and did nothing.

Quite a few game overs have her to take credit for them.
