The DLC for both Borderlands that add a new area (not the skins from 2 but the four larger expansions), Fallout 3, FO: New Vegas, and Skyrim. All favorites of mine.
The two separate stories in GTA 4 and the Zombie add on in Red Dead Redemption are up there. Bioshock 2 and its Minerva's Den story as well. These four are sometimes showcased as great examples of using your engine for more than a single purpose (just one game) and how DLC should REALLY be done.
This may be bias but because I LOVE Mass Effect the ones that add story and/or "lore" in parts 2 and 3 are very good too.
I often use all of these as primary examples for how DLC should work in my many conversations on the subject. I have quite the collection of DLC from various games on the Xbox 360 but I never buy bullshit crap like skins, characters, costumes, and shit that should have shipped (RE5 and that $5 price tag for a multiplayer mode that required a 1kb download).
DLC worth buying
Re: DLC worth buying
Alan Wake also had some worthwhile DLC. ACtually think the DLC was better then the expansion/sequal American Nightmare which was a total nightmare to play due to the repeating stages
.
Re: DLC worth buying
Honestly, I probably won't finish the main game, so I don't really need dlc to go with it.

Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare was worth it IMO.

Common theme I am seeing is the better (larger production) the game the more people enjoy the DLC. Any lower budget recommendations?

Mark of the Ninja has great DLC. You get a new level, some new achievements, some back story on one character, new items and text based developer commentary

Re: DLC worth buying
If that $20 gets you all the DLC then yes. Dawnguard and Dragonborn easily added about twenty hours+ to my game and there's more to do beside.ninjainspandex wrote:I'm addicted to Skyrim right now, is the DLC worth it? it's like $20
Bethesda usually do a good job with their DLC. Yes, there are the horse armors and Operation: Anchorage's out there, but then there's Shivering Isle's and The Pitt.
I also like most of the DLC for Mass Effect 2, but was indifferent to Mass effect 3's, mostly because EA doubled the price for the single player stuff.
Bad DLC is things like Street Fighter X Tekken where 12 characters (fan favs as well) are held back behind a line of code or two that costs $15 to bypass. Fuck that.

Mark of the Ninja I second too.wclem wrote:Common theme I am seeing is the better (larger production) the game the more people enjoy the DLC. Any lower budget recommendations?
Also the two Trials games on XBLA. Added a bunch of levels to the core game. The Steam release of the second game combined all the levels of the first with DLC and second with DLC for one price.

Valkyria Chronicles has some good extra maps and a side story with Selvaria.

The Hyperdimension Neptunia games (At least the first two, I'm not sure about the third in the series) have a lot of good DLC. Namely because so much of it is actually free. Extra side quests, entire dungeons, and weapons are given away as free DLC for those.
