I may have damaged my mouse wheel

Post by Erik_Twice »

Today I decided to clean my mouse because it was dirty and had hair stuck in the wheel. All right, I took a toothpick and spinned the wheel so all the gunk tied to it was picked up by the toothpick. It's gone.

Now it doesn't turn correctly, if I move it up or down it jitters at a certain position :(

What do I do?

Is it a nice mouse?

If it's not, just buy a new one. Not worth an hour of your time to fix it.

Basically two problems can happen with the wheel. Either it's out of alignment with another gear, (which is somehow connected to the PCB), or you broke one of the gears entirely.

Alignment is an easy fix, but if the gear is broken you'll have to get precise with some epoxy or somehow find an exact replacement.

It's a somewhat nice mouse, not something cheap. I'll try to open it and see if I can fix it.

Good luck to you.

I've been playing all my FPS with a laser mouse from the late 90s, no special capabilities but irreplaceable

There might just be a hair stuck somewhere between the photodiodes making it think you're moving the wheel. If it is barely registering it, that could make it jitter.

I completely forget that this was an issue. Why? Because it solved itself and I only noticed just now

Thank guys.

It probably was a bit of fluff near the encoders then.
