EGM to become history?

Let's face it, magazines in print have outstayed their welcome. Now all the community has to do is scan as much content as possible before consolidating everything into online material. It's interesting how Dan Hsu has blown the lid off gaming journalists. It's true pampering magazine editors is a joke compared to what PR people do in other industries, but it has definitely cast doubt on the whole notion of old-fashioned gaming journalism. Independent criticism is the way forward.

For the record I never liked EGM's rating system or its very-short review format, but their extensive coverage of Japanese games made their magazine interesting for a time.

Wow, I haven't read EGM in...seven years? I always liked it, more so than most other game magazines. I hadn't heard that Hsu had left. That's kinda shocking.

I never missed a issue of EGM from 1991-1999 after that magazine was all ads and had almost no good articles on gaming and the review system i liked but that alone is not worth $5 a issue when you can can read them online for free.

I would agree with this IF I spent every minute glued to a computer screen, You still need physical reading material for the throne room  . EGM has really hit rock bottom! Almost every page has some sort of AD on it and their review system now kinda sucks (One man review?), It was nice in the 90's when I would get an EGM that weighed like three pounds and almost all of it was real magazine material and not ADs!

I certainly would miss the hell out of my MAD magazine if I could no longer look forward to it coming in the mail or a few select comic books if I could no longer go to the comic book store and buy a special edition, I couldn't collect a digital special edition or get it signed either. But so goes the world I guess.

The problem with a magazine like EGM is that back in the day they were a source of news about video games. Now with the internet we're seeing a general trend of print news sources declining in popularity in favor of online. Online is easier to handle and can encompass more, since digital space is cheap, while space in a magazine/newspaper is expensive. I doubt we'll see something like MAD or comic books going away, because they aren't news sources. They're in the same realm as books, which are still going strong despite the recent release of fantastic devices like the Kindle. With book-style media the immediacy of the internet is not a large benefit. With news media, though, the internet makes everything else obsolete.

I happen to LIKE Electronic Gaming Monthly. I've been reading it since the Genesis/Super NES days.

I have a huge stack of old EGM magazines from the 16-bit days. Back then I was fascinated by all gaming magazines, but EGM stood out for its content, scoops and it also had a slightly more grown up feel than the nonsense that was Gamepro. I don't remember when I stopped collecting EGM issues. Probably about the same time I discovered gaming websites. There really is no reason to buy gaming magazines anymore. Frankly, I just don't have ROOM for any more. There was that one Playstation magazine I used to get for the demo discs, but now you can download demos on any PS3 or Xbox360

I'm in favor of saving paper, so I don't mind seeing them make the switch at all. It's such a waste considering I was getting free issues for about three years and I imagine plenty of other people were, too. It was too easy; anyone could easily find a promotion and get six months to a year worth of free issues--and they weren't even good! Ads galore like everyone else is saying, they were also seriously lacking in content.

Is Hsu the guy who made the terrible unfunny comics at the end of each issue?
