It might not be the best port, but it is unique. Sometimes less is more, and I find that to be the case for the sms port. Something about it being a bit bare bones makes it creepier to me as it suits the game well.

So does that mean that the SMS version of Sonic was ahead of its time even though it came out a few months after the Genesis version?

i think the LCD version of Sonic 2 was way ahead of its time. "less is more" indeed.

If it was released today, I'd buy it. For me, the sms port captured the feeling of claustrophobic panic that still holds true to this day.

Yeah, I still have no idea what the hell you mean by "ahead of its time". I buy retro-oriented new releases all the time, but that doesn't make them "ahead of their time".
