Experience DOS Gaming in 2013 with Muri

Post by GSZX1337 »

I read about Muri on Rock Paper Shotgun about two weeks ago and it had gotten my interest almost immediately. You play as a gun-toting scientist in a robo-suit, navigating non-linear levels and jumping from platform to platform. That's right, it's Duke Nukem with a splash of Turrican.

The developer (Remar Games for Ludosity) put a lot of effort into emulating the 90s DOS shareware experience. The color palette's only 16 colors, the sound effects are simple PC speaker effects, and the frame rate is only 16fps (with an alternate 32fps "smooth mode"). You can read about these efforts on the Ludosity Blog (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4).

So far I've only played the first episode, but I'm really enjoying it so far. The gameplay reminds me more of the original Duke Nukem than Commander Keen (the other commonly stated inspiration) as there's no overworld map and there's weapon upgrades available.

Interesting...

Although if he really wanted to recreate the DOS gaming experience, users would have to cross their fingers, hoping the game would work on their system.

I feel ya, man. I wish that the game was actually made for DOS instead of being made in Game Maker. Don't me wrong: I have nothing against Game Maker, it's just that having this playable on a DOS PC (or DOSBox) would be killer.
