DLC worth buying

Post by wclem »

I was thinking today that I have been scammed into paying more for a game by getting crappy DLC.

I was wondering what everyones thoughts on what DLC is really worth buying. Take into consideration that most of it will be digital and will not work without the game. I am hoping to use your opinions to make purchases.

This idea spawned today because of my disappointment with Dishonored DLC, Brigmore Witches. It was a waste of money and time, did nothing for me. It is souring me on paying more to get little more. I know Bioshock just dropped some DLC and Last of Us has some coming up.

So, what are you thoughts, opinions. Remember, this is not about the good or bad of DLC (being intangible digital and being additional charge for what should already be in the game), but rather does it give back some play value for the money.

No one does DLC better than Valve, it should extend the game, adding something new to the original gameplay mechanics and expand on the story. Valve don't tend to charge for DLC either.

It should extend the life of the game, no be a cash in for cosmetics.

I agree with this. To me, DLC should offer something extra. DLC I am not really interested in is cosmetic, shallow, unoriginal examples. E.g. new costumes/outfits or new characters that odd nothing new.

Here's a good example of DLC:
- The Walking Dead 400 Days (an hour long, mini episode to bridge the gap between the 1st and upcoming Walking Dead game. Created and designed after the game's release.).

Here's a bad example:
- WWE games (DLC planned months before the game is released. Included on the disc, only unlocked after "purchasing" the extra. Usually over price extras such as new attires, different versions of the same wrestlers, new wrestlers that could have just been included in the game and retail price)
Own: Mega Drive, Saturn, Dreamcast, Playstation 1, Playstation 2, Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Playstation 5, PS Vita, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Wii U, Game Boy Advance, DS, 3DS, Switch, Switch 2, Xbox, Xbox 360

I'll try to read up on it first to see if the DLC is even useful at all.

If the original game is a top seller or receives high praise (or both), I'll just wait about a year before buying it. Chances are that it will be a fraction of the price as a Director's Cut / Game of the Year / Ultimate / Whatever Edition and has a high probability of coming out with all of the DLC.

The problem sometimes is having enough self control to wait for a later edition that isn't guaranteed to be released. It's a rarity for me buy new stuff anymore because I have a pretty big back log, so it works out as a decent strategy to save me a few bucks.

That being said... I agree that quite a bit of the DLC I waited for was trash anyway and I'm extremely happy if I don't have to pay full price for any of it.

I don't know if it counts, but New Super Luigi U was a pretty good DLC to me. $20 for about 40 full-sized levels (80 short ones due to 100 seconds long) seems pretty nice. Although it did get its own release and therefore can work by itself.

Aren't Elder Scrolls DLCs usually pretty good?

Asura Wrath's final episode is completely worth it. If you have a thing for insane final bosses with tons of forms/stages, heck yeah it was amazing.

Usually i just wait to a "complete" edition of the game on physical form. It happened with Streeth fighter, Mortal Kombat, Fallout, Borderlands, Tomb Raider, Dead Island, Enslaved, etc.

Saints Row: The Third - The Trouble with Clones DLC

Probably my favorite DLC of all time they did a really good job with it. Alot of the other SR DLC is completely pointless though. They do have great sales though got Saint's Row 3 Complete with all DLC for like $12 last Christmas and I have to say it's probably the best money I have spent in the last few years. Me and a friend tore it up for weeks with C0-op and had some really fun moments together.
