This is the end of an era that I didn't even know was still going. Legitimate copies of the game creator: ZZT have been available for mail order until the middle of last month. With no retail or digital release, mail order was the only way of purchasing the game. You can download the freeware version, but it's not the same as buying the floppy.
The PA Report has the story here.

I can't believe ZZT is still around! That totally blows my mind.

I can't believe people were still paying for ZZT!emwearz wrote:I can't believe ZZT is still around! That totally blows my mind.
Re: Final Copy of ZZT
It's been freeware for years.
I first got it in 1993 on AOL, back when they had software libraries. I have mine carefully preserved on a floppy disk with well over 100 user created worlds, many of them relics of 90s pop culture (MST3K, Power Rangers, Ren & Stimpy vs. Beavis & Butthead, etc.)
Anyone remember the Kohlersoft "Yoshi" series? Those were some well made worlds.

Wow I had no idea there were physical copies. Been playing this for years.
Re: Final Copy of ZZT
Just went through my collection. I'd grab whatever AOL had. It just happened to be big 20 years ago.
And here was the first game in the 5 part (eventually) Yoshi saga -
Of course, not all the games were winnable due to bad programming, these were people my age at the time making these games, but thank goodness for that hidden cheat menu

Re: Final Copy of ZZT
The version of ZZT I got back in the day came packaged with 2 games known as "The Best of ZZT", one game is called The Isle of Head Hunters and the other is called Royal Treasures. I think they won a design contest that Epic put out after they released it.Ack wrote:Exed, do you have any of the "classic" ZZT games, like Tower?
The versions you can get here have some other games packed in too.
I wish I had more of them, even if they didn't work. AOL must have had hundreds more. But they charged by the hour back then and I was only at 2400 baud! I was really into these games, and obviously, TV of the 90s

I forgot it became freeware a while ago. I changed my post.ExedExes wrote:It's been freeware for years.
I find it fitting that the final copy of ZZT has been sold to a Game Design Teacher.
