I was a freshman when this came out and thought it was just a stupid kids movie and passed on it. Seen it last year for the first time, and i was right. I can't stand the acting of fred savage or his brother, just irritating fuckers.

Even when he was a kid, Fred Savage reminded me of a stressed out stock broker on the edge.

haha, I feel like every role he played was just "Fred Savage." And he always had such a short fuse. He was always blowing up at Paul for no reason.

BTW, I think my favorite post-Wonder Years Savage role was in The Rules of Attraction. Hilarious.

Anyway, for anyone planning to watch soon - would be cool to make a list of every game they play in the movie... though I'd be willing to bet that's just a Google-search away really.

WTF? Really? Aren't you in your late 20's? How did you let this happen?
I've never seen it either. Sure the odd quote or two are cool, but id never looked interesting enough to grab me. *shrug*

Frankly The Wizard strikes me as the kind of movie that you won't love unless you watched it as a kid.

Even as a kid it was odd and had a terrible pace. That and I think everyone wanted to punch lil' Savage in the face.

Yeah it's just a straight up terrible movie. It's not cute, it's not kitschy, it's not "nostalgic" - it just sucks.

But it was the best 90 minute commercial for Super Mario Bros 3 ever

Look, let's face it: The Wizard is an awful piece of 1980s feel good cheese that banks entirely on blatant commercialism and characters that are almost cartoonish in their behavior, particularly the villains.

Then again, perhaps its also a perfect representation of the American 1980s social situation: inundated with advertising, in a world where all problems can be solved with no worries and in which the good guys always win in the end, with only a dash of sentimentality covering the fact that these people are likely incredibly sick or at least assholish.

I mean, let's face it, you have an autistic kid broken out of an institution by his brother, who team up with a runaway and a gambling trucker to win a video game tournament against a smarmy Aryan prick while evading a slimy bounty hunter hired by an awful nouveau riche mother who really doesn't give a shit about her children beyond the one mentally ill boy. These people suck.
