noiseredux's Monthly VG Movie: Once Upon Atari

Post by noiseredux »

I've been toying with the idea of starting a thread like this for a while...

As a fan of video game movies, I wanted to create a thread where once a month I'd select a movie to watch and invite you all to do the same so we can discuss it. The beauty of video game related movies is that there's all kinds of facets to check out. And over the months I plan to showcase variety. Whether it's a movie based on a game, a movie about games, a documentary, anime or connected in some other way I hope some of you guys get in on the good, bad and amazingly ugly flicks that are part of our hobby. And speaking of which, I hope some of you stick it out and sit through some of the "bad" movies that may be selected. You might find that they can be a lot more fun than you think if viewed with the right eyes or with the right friends. Feel free to use this thread to make all sorts of comments, observations, etc regarding the current film. Perhaps use it to plan a time for some of you to stream the pick at the same time while chatting on IRC.

Previous Movies: NOW PLAYING - FEBRUARY 2016:

Once Upon Atari

2003, 120 Minutes, Unrated

Trailer:

This month's Together Retro title is Pitfall, so it seemed fitting that we watch a documentary about the golden era of Atari.

Once Upon Atari is a documentary by Howard Scott Warshaw. Who better to walk us through such a story? This is the man who created the 2600 games Yar's Revenge and E.T. - the ying and yang of game design on the VCS.

The documentary was originally released as four half-hour episodes and then later edited together into this full length release. The story of Atari is told through interviews with various game designers and employees.

The cast includes HSW, Nolan Bushnell, Todd Frye, Larry Kaplan, and many others.

Perhaps the film will encourage you to pull out some other 2600 games along with Pitfall this month...

Once Upon Atari is available on DVD. It's also up for digital sale through GOG.

The Wizard

1989, 100 minutes, Rated PG.

Trailer:

For a lot of the coming months I have ideas for movies that are sort of timely for that particular month, or fit some kind of special theme. But for this first month I wanted to just go with something of a classic as I felt it might be the most inviting way to get the ball rolling. Unfortunately this one isn't streaming on Netflix, but it is available to rent for under $3 on virtually every digital distribution imaginable and the physical edition can be had for not much more if you'd prefer to add it to your collection permanently.

The Wizard (1989) is one of those movies that I'm sure the majority of us have seen - many of us in the theater (me!). While some might call it one big commercial for Nintendo and Super Mario Bros. 3, for many of us youngin's it was nothing short of mind-blowing. But perhaps more surprising is that it still holds up as a rather enjoyable family film.

If you're not familiar it is a story of two brothers (Edwards & Savage) and a friend (Lewis) who hitch-hike to California to enter the younger Wizardly brother Jimmy who has emotional problems in a video game tournament. Meanwhile dad and older bro (Slater) are following, and so is a bounty-hunter (!!!). Though it sounds slightly zany, it also has quite a bit of heart, and along the journey Jimmy's problems come to light.

The film was directed by Todd Holland who has gone on to work mostly in television including Malcolm in the Middle, The Larry Sanders Show and Friends. It stars Christian Slater who went on to perfect his Jack Nickelson impression, Jenny Lewis who went on to front Rilo Kiley and create many an indie-crush, and Fred Savage who I don't believe ever had another acting gig. Luke Edwards - the titular "Wizard" - has done quite a bit over the years including roles in Roseanne and Jeepers Creepres 2.

THE WIZARD is the second best film to star both Savage brothers.

You don't remember Fred Savage as The Mole?

Was the initial post really written four and a half years ago, or is there something wrong with the time settings in my computer?
