I must stipulate, this is my personal opinion on the subject and am just providing these ideas for any interested parties to consider.

Well if you are going to the trouble of making a thousand game list, you might as well make it grandiose and call it "1001 Games that every gamer should try before they die" or something in the like. Making it just a list of "1001 good games" or "1001 games the racketboy community liked" diminishes the accomplishment and hard work of creating such an extensive list.

Once you get the title right (which is important and should not be overlooked), time to develop some criteria.

Games included should fit into at least one and hopefully more of the following potential categories, without being elitist dicks 8) :

Cultural impact- Games that broke barriers or raised awareness for VGs in pop culture or the world stage. Games that bridged gaps between casual non-gamers and hardcore gamers and/or games that defined a generation or genre that exists today. Potential examples: Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros., Tetris, Pokemon, Angry Birds

Industry impact- Games that set industry standard, set sales records and/or influenced many games that followed them. Games that helped sell a console/brand or became flagship titles for a developer/publisher. Potential examples: Starcraft, Halo, Gran Turismo, FF7

Technological impact- Games that ushered in new technology, chipsets and pushed the boundaries of the consumer technology they were provided on. Games who's hardware or development that spurred the next great leaps in gaming technology. Potential examples: Starfox, Goldeneye, Unreal, Quake

Games that spawned successful franchises- Nuff said. Games that not only put out a ton of sequels or pushed product lines, but also have huge fanbases. Potential examples: Zelda, Super Mario, Sonic, Tekken, Street Fighter, Warcraft, Call of Duty, Madden etc. Then take from those franchises the most beloved and impactful titles out of each franchise for consideration.

Games that have universal critical/fan acclaim- Games that almost unanimously scored near perfect in all reviews or are beloved for any number of reasons. This would be the catchall kind of category...Potential examples: Chrono Trigger, Metroid Prime, Mass Effect, Portal, DK Country etc.

Again the above is just EXAMPLE categories and titles. The point was just trying to get some kind of structure to start listing games under, and eliminating them from there. Don't get hung up on categorizing them however, it's only meant to be used as a guideline for games making a cut.

Where a "group" will be useful is- you shouldn't just list the game and put a number next to it or a link to it's wiki page. I think to make such a list even more impressive than those who have attempted it before, is to provide a personal (and contributor group approved) explanation, in detail, for every single game on the list. Maybe a paragraph or two citing the reasons WE THINK they should play it and acknowledge it.

Daunting? Sure, but since there is no time limit and urgency to complete it... why not ball the #$%! out with it? Go hard or go home. #insertinspirationalphraseolgyhere

Yoshi. Star World. One of the most mind blowing boss fights Mario has ever encountered. Mode 7 graphics (Bowser did have mode 7 graphics didn't he?).

Nope, I never played or owned Contra...until now and even now I haven't played but a few minutes of it. And I'm a huge Nintendo fan...I grew up on the NES. But of course I was young and a girl so my mom picked what games I could play...I got to play Super Mario 3 to my hearts content but not any shooting games until I was 12-13.

But back on topic, I saw someone else said they would be a little biased as well if they put a list together. If someone is making a list for the forums, I think we should have fans of all consoles join in. So it's not just Nintendo fans or Sega fans...or...xbone fans. And said fans should talk to eachother when making the list, so they can sort of vote on what should be added, if enough people say add it or if the reason behind adding the game is good.

Also I agree with Cha Cha. But I would add a catagory for art/indie games. Artistic games that push the boundrys of a "video game" and good indie games. Again I'll fall back on Mirror's Edge for examples of "art" it's a stylized game so that's why. At the moment I can't come up with any other examples of an "art" game but as for indie games...there's so many idk if I can list just one good one lol.

220. I would have had a much better ratio if I had stopped with 5th gen stuff. Starting from Dreamcast on, I was skipping whole lines, a couple times a few, before I hit another game I had played. Indie games raised my score too quite a bit at the end.

I'd think first you'd have to develop some criteria or restrictions for the list. How do you really measure cultural, fandom and industry impacts made by the games? Sales, aggregate review scores and number of re-releases/sequels certainly are a factor and a guideline, but what else would you have be qualifications for the list? There are all kinds of extreme outliers to consider as well... Do we consider games games so bad that they are cult favorites or famous for being bad in some way? The list goes on and is quite daunting, so I don't want to post a wall of text for suggestions on criteria... until I know you guys are gonna try something.
No, you're right. Rules have to be established, such as "one from a series" unless there is more than one that is significant in some way. For instance, only putting on one Super Mario Bros. game would be difficult, since Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and Super Mario 64 are all significant in gaming. But as much as I love the game, Super Mario Bros. 2(either Doki Doki reskin or Lost Levels) just isn't as important.

I say this with all the love in the world for the game and all, but I don't really see what Super Mario World did to earn it a spot on your list of significant mario games. It's just another 2D mario game, it didnt add much from Mario Bros 3. The only truly notable thing about it imo (other than it being a fantastic game of course) is that it was a SNES launch title. If anything, I'd say that Super Mario LAND for Game Boy is the more significant mario launch title, as it showed off what portable gaming could do.
I kind of agree. SMB 2 and 3 had a certain magic for me when I was a kid. I was in awe of those games and played them many times. Super Mario World felt to me a lot like the 3DS version of Super Mario 3d Land did, like this is just Nintendo mailing it in. I think even Miyamoto once said he was disappointed by how Super Mario World turned out.

The original Sonic the Hedgehog seemed so much more amazing at the time. It was so fresh and new, while Super Mario World was just the same old same old, but with 16-bit graphics. They did that with a couple of games on the SNES, just the same games with prettier graphics. To me, the Genesis was doing more interesting things with established franchises. Contra Hard Corps was so much more experimental and fresh than Contra III, and Bloodlines was more interesting than Super Castlevania.

And yeah, I did actually have more fun with Super Mario Land than Super Mario World, but it's possible that it was simply due to the novelty of playing a portable Mario for the first time ever. It was something new

Maybe not the thread for this, but I take umbrage that Super Mario 3D Land was Nintendo "phoning it in." They do a lot of unique tricks with the fixed camera and level design that belies that entirely.

Biggest thing to me was the ability to save. Changed things from finding shortcuts through the game (warp zone/whistle/etc) to trying to find everything. Especially for those of us that had restrictions on game time.
