Re: Games Beaten 2013
It takes more than two hits before Batman's range gets a dramatic increase. Even then, a guy who leaps across large distances (not wave dashing or teleporting as you put it) is not quite as unrealistic as Dante or Kratos being suspended in mid air for five seconds defying gravity while they execute an air combo.Violent By Design wrote:Hit one guy once, switch target and another guy once - he'll wave dash all over the place. It's all relative, but Batman doesn't strain believibility quite as much as those games do. Batman just represents a guy whose physical training has been so incredibly extreme that his abilities are borderline super human, and the games try to reflect that. But guys like Dante, Bayonetta and Kratos are doing stuff that would literally require super powers.

He's certainly wave dashing. He's not always leaping or rolling, sometimes he just flat out slides to the guys.Gamerforlife wrote:It takes more than two hits before Batman's range gets a dramatic increase. I can see someone preferring a game based on realism, but I don't get why Batman would be the example. Batman is just as fictional as implausible as God of War and Devil May Cry. Streets of Rage is more realistic than the Arkham games.
Though to go on a rant, Batman has always gotten so much credit because he's supposed to be realistic, while someone like Superman gets shitted on for being too uh..fake I guess. I never understood that. Characters like Superman are more realistic because they're at least explained to be an alien or not human. Batman...just doesn't make sense, there could never be anyone like him or even close to him.

I finally beat Professor Layton and the Curious Village. I had it for years and beat the Last Spector first. It was good though, once I got into it.

91. GunForce (SNES)(Run and Gun)
92. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie (SNES)(Beat 'Em Up)
93. Cliffhanger (SNES)(Beat 'Em Up)
I can now say I've beaten all three Power Rangers video games on the Super Nintendo. And no, I feel no shame. They're not bad games at all. The first one, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, is bland and easy, but The Movie features some interesting level design and a beat 'em up version of the Fatal Fury lane system. And I love The Fighting Edition and recommend it to other SNES fighting game fans.
But anyway, back to The Movie. It's a surprisingly well-designed game, with some interesting variation in level design and some boss battles that are entertaining despite some repetitiveness. The base enemies also offer little more than palette swaps and modified behavior, but there's a large supporting cast of mechanical monstrosities to get in the Rangers' way and more than a few environmental hazards. My favorite level is probably the second, which starts with the Rangers boarding an aircraft carrier and then fighting across the flight deck as jets take off. Some care must be paid to these jets though, because the drag they create just after takeoff sucks everyone along with them. Each level offers some kind of treat like this, being a snowboarding jaunt, destructible materials, electrified walls, so on and so forth. There's also some variety with each of the Rangers, though I gotta say, I prefer to stick with Tommy.
And then there is Cliffhanger. Cliffhanger on the Super Nintendo is almost impossible to beat. It requires perfect timing, cheap tactics, and blatant memorization to know where to go next. More than once I manipulated bugs in the game to survive fights or abused the poor AI. And more than once I nearly threw the controller over the cheap mess that this game is. There's so much wrong here, it's actually quite pathetic. For example: grab a knife and kick. Watch the knife vanish in your hand because no frame of animation was created to show you kicking while holding the knife. Or try to jump after landing on a ledge with two knife throwing enemies. You can't, an invisible wall prevents you for some reason. More than once an enemy will only approach once another has been knocked down, so stand still and throw a single punch at a time, slow enough not to go into a combo and knock an enemy down but fast enough to keep the enemy from being able to fight back. There are problems with framing the levels, there are problems with hit detection and unresponsive controls, there are problems with everything! Is it as bad as the Pit-Fighter port? Well...no. At least this game has color. But this is the kind of game that makes people hate licensed properties and shows just how wrong and rushed things can go.
That said, Cliffhanger did make me jumpkick a helicopter.

Re: Games Beaten 2013
I just beat Batman: Arkham City. I can't say I've felt this satisfied by an ending in a while. As for the reality of his fights mechanics, it depends on how you fight. If you take the thugs on one by one then I you could say it's realistic. If you're trying to get the biggest damn critical strike combo possible, not so much. Also, he doesn't just start flying all over to fight enemies right away. You have to build up your combo which then increases agility leading to the crazy jumping.

Grand Theft Auto V- Overall a pretty good game, but IMO if you've played one GTA you've played them all. Getting the platinum trophy on this game took me over 130+ hours, and that was before they nerfed the RP you get from races online (specifically CR). The controls for all the GTA games just seem....off to me. Slow response time (fractional) and the shooting mechanic isn't the best. The story was good, but not great. I wasn't sure how I felt about switching between 3 protagonists at first, but I think overall I didn't really care for it. It kinda took me out of the immersion of the story. Trevor was by far the best character, followed by Franklin and then Michael. I don't feel like Franklin got fleshed out character wise as much as he could have been and I didn't like Michael at all. He was whiny and not mention a rat. I HATED his family, and every scene with Jimmy I wanted to blow his head off. Good game but not GOTY quality IMO.
Hotline Miami- A few more trophies to get and I'll have the platinum for this game. What a great game! My only complaint is the length, but otherwise I loved this game. The ADDICTING gameplay, the music, the overall atmosphere. The game had a steep learning curve for me, but once you get a handle on the controls and know the layout of the levels you really fuck shit up. You die A LOT in this game, but that's sorta the point as you learn from your mistakes and go again. And again. And again. I can't wait for Hotline Miami 2!
