Re: 1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die
I most likely don't fit in the "established and respected members" catagory but I'd love to help out if someone actually makes a list of 100 or 250 games for this forum. I might fill a "quota" that other's wouldn't...namely early 20's female gamer. I also see some games as forms of art (Mirror's Edge).

Why not go ahead and develop a list on your own? It seems like it would be a useful tool for recommending titles to other fans of games.GirlGamer55 wrote:I most likely don't fit in the "established and respected members" catagory but I'd love to help out if someone actually makes a list of 100 or 250 games for this forum. Sure, but at the same time, do you really need to play Halo, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, and Halo Wars? And why would a game like Prey be on the list, when it did absolutely nothing for the FPS genre and is generally considered a major disappointment? The only real redeeming factor I can think of for it would be that it features a Native American protagonist struggling with his heritage, though I don't think it handles that story particularly well. I like seeing niche titles appear on the list too, but some of the choices just seem odd.Gamerforlife wrote:I understand some of the negative feedback in this thread(the fact that Resident Evil 5 is on that list is a joke), but man I can't hate on this list because I just really appreciate the way it goes outside the box with some of its picks. Any list can have games like Uncharted 2, Halo, Grand Theft Auto, Mario, etc, etc, etc.
But seeing games like The Dishwasher Dead Samurai, Crush, Chibi Robo, Metal Arms, Freedom Fighters, Subterrania, or FREAKING STRETCH PANIC...
That's pretty shocking. I just like seeing a list that seems compiled by people who actually know something about gaming, because your average joe gamer hasn't even heard of those titles. And as someone whose tastes generally gravitate towards niche, obscure or indie titles, I can get behind that.
And yet, seeing something like WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2010 on there shows that these guys aren't too snobby either. It's a nice balanced list in its representation of different genres and both well known and more obscure titles. But yeah, I don't agree with every entry on it but no list is going make everyone happy

Yeah, you're right. There are some odd choices on this list, which is both good AND bad.Ack wrote:Why not go ahead and develop a list on your own? As long as the whole time you guys are discussing your list, the theme is- "We are doing this for our own edification and amusement" and not "we have a definitive list based on our <insert arbitrary gaming qualifications here> and people SHOULD AGREE or GTFO", I'd be glad to see what you come up with and participate... if the discussion is an open one.
I just feel like these 'large' lists are an exercise in futility, because you cannot possibly please everyone, and 1001 games on a list gives the vast majority of gamers 975 reasons/chances (on average) to pick your list apart and second guess your motives. Which is exactly what we did to these guy's list.

I own the book, I'm a big retro-gamer, and I still only scored 258.

Re: 1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die
I may be wrong, but I've never actually seen a list here on the site meant to point out games that were historically fundamental done in a manner where everyone teamed up to make a single enthralling list. Every thread that comes close to that idea I've seen has asked everyone what there own personal top 10 or whatever games of that sort are.AppleQueso wrote:We've done tons of those "top 100 ___" threads before, and even with asking people to provide reasons and descriptions they still end up being mostly pretty aimless.
And as Cha Cha worded so perfectly, any list of that kind would be for our personal edification and amusement. Not an actual published work attempting to make a definite base for historically important games.
I feel old when talking to anyone my age yet too inexperienced to effectively talk to anyone older. Life is grand that way.

Re: 1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die
Er well I have a...biased opinion towards some games like...RPG's (Final Fantasy for instance), sports games in general, typical shooters (Halo, CoD) and so on. That's why I would like to help with a list that a group of people would work on and not one person, or else it will end up like the original list, full of stuff I like..but not everyone else would. So it would be 100 video games I think you must play before you die.Ack wrote:Why not go ahead and develop a list on your own? Also I was born in 1991 and while I have played some older games on the NES, Atari and Odyssey 2, I'm not an expert on any of them or any old arcade style games since I'v never stepped foot into an arcade. Actually the only arcade game I played was a racing game called Outrun by Sega. Damn I loved that game lol..
Anyways that leaves a gap that i'm trying to fill in my video game knowledge. So any list I made would be focused on a few NES games to Gamecube, Gameboy to DS, PS1 to PS3. I might toss a few typical games in of other consoles..Sonic for one, but I don't know a lot about Sega games in general so again biased. I was a Nintendo fan growing up, I never even owned anything Sega till two years ago.

We had so many threads in the vein of "Top 100 SNES games" where everyone was working on making a single list.MrEco wrote:I may be wrong, but I've never actually seen a list here on the site meant to point out games that were historically fundamental done in a manner where everyone teamed up to make a single enthralling list. Enough of these types of threads were popping up that people were actually complaining about it.

Well knowing about 1000+ games is a bit hardAck wrote: Sure, but at the same time, do you really need to play Halo, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, and Halo Wars? Has some good choices and some bad choices so in overall is a decent book.
