Why Gamers Can't Stop Playing First Person Shooters

Post by Ack »

Recently I posted a link to an article about video games and their rising influence in Iraq. I'm linking a new article today from the New Yorker, this time about the physical and psychological effects of playing first person shooters. The final thoughts in the article may be surprising for some of you.

http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/e ... games.html
Before zeroing in on first-person shooters, Nacke had looked at a number of other games, such as the third-person shooter Kane & Lynch and the real-time strategy game Fragile Alliance, comparing the experience of play in the different environments. “In the more casual games,” Nacke said, “it’s more about problem-solving. We didn’t see the same absorption, the same engagement flow that we have in first-person shooters.”

I do believe that FPS games are a great way of relieving stress. Especially when it comes to COD because it is so easy. I still prefer a good TPS game like Ghost Recon Future Soldier though. Great article but man was it long haha.
I am buying all Saturn games, PM me with your offerings and I will let you know if I need the game or not! (Everything must be CIB)

Currently trying to knock off all the sports games, would like to get them <$5 each! Of course if you would like to donate them I will gladly pay the shipping! :)

Good article. All that would be to me as "why i like FPS" But for me, I like to get into the history, the notable games, the good examples, the memorable series. Over the past few years, I've done pretty good with that.

FPS are cool, although after a good while they start to blend with one another.

Yeah, it's gotten to the point for me that I don't really enjoy them anymore. I realised this when I was bored as hell playing Halo 4 on launch day, it was at that point that I knew the only reason I was playing was for the story (Having read all the Halo books...). I've suddenly found myself playing a lot of car games just for the sake of playing something different and new, and damn it, I'm having a blast.
I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes.
