A lot of people really like CoP more than anything else in FFXI. At a high level, most of it can be solo'd now, with all the original level caps being removed from the battlefields.
Yeah, but I'm not sure how much closure any part of the game is going to be giving me... OH WELL, I'M STILL PLAYING FOR NOW!
I mostly just wish the process of leveling up and raising caps was faster.
Yeah I remember getting really bogged down by a couple of the limit break quests in the earlier days of the game.

Playing through the 8-10 ranks of nation missions, RotZ, and CoP missions, and gaining access to/completing Dynamis gives a fairly general sense of completion. Actually, I would say that finishing RotZ really completes the main, original, story. CoP just adds on to it really well. ToAU and WotG are very much separate from everything before them.

::cough:: I get the feeling you're looking for others who are playing FFXI; I get a vague urge to play it whenever I talk about it, but I don't have a Windows partition, or nearly enough time to spend on the game anymore. I think Isolia still plays it, though.

FFXIII has beautiful art design and one of the best soundtracks of the generation going for it. Even if the game bores you, listen to the soundtrack sometime :D

Even though the game has a ton of flaws, I don't think the lack of towns and world maps is one of them. I always thought of them as time wasters, especially sections where you're supposed to wander around or even sections where you know exactly where to go and still spend ten minutes between walking there and fighting random brainless enemies.

I've been getting bored with jRPGs lately - probably because most of them require very little skill, are very repetitive, and are very similar to each other. I'll still play one I find challenging or interesting, and the art and music of FFXIII were interesting enough for me. I was captivated by its style, like I had been with Valkyrie Profile 1 and 2 (though not as much )

I had fun with the battle system too. A really great concept, changing jobs in the middle of a battle. It took too long to get good, and it was never hard enough, but a few of the fights were really brilliant.

There's a lot to be said for a style-over-substance game with more substance than all of its competitors. FFXIII isn't that game most of the time, but there were moments. Close enough.

I know I haven't said anything concrete or specific, and this isn't enough to convince anyone the game's not a steaming pile of shit, but I haven't played it in a few years.

Yep, that's on my list. I've been interested in that since I read your posts about it.

But I'd have to get a Super Nintendo.

Hardly hating on the genre or anything, 90% of anything is crap and you know I've been a big fan.

Yeah I know the Encyclopedia and while I was looking for others who are playing, I did find a linkshell of folks a while back. I just kind of want the game to stop DOMINATING MY VIDEO GAME LIFE which it feels like it's been doing. (I'm not used to sinking hundreds of hours into a game and still having the majority of content seem out of reach.)

I feel like I have Final Fantasy Stockholm Syndrome...

So get a Super Nintendo. It's the single best retro console you can own.

I do find myself getting burned out lately by Square Enix, Namco, Atlus, and NIS RPGs, mainly due to their length and repetitive nature. This days I prefer to play games by more "obscure" developers like Falcom and great defunct developers like Produce, Quest, Quintet...

30-99 takes a week, maybe. Weekend if you've got limit breaks done and little else to do. Can get decent XP for subjobs doing imps in SoA as well, just swap jobs before you hand them in.

Skilling up, on the other hand...

Granted, much of that relies on being able to get into appropriate XP groups (they were handing out Abyssea stuff last month though). As I've probably said before, it might feel cheap, but get to 99 as fast as you can and you can wrap up the vast majority of the story content fairly easily. If you've been collecting the login promo points you can probably just grab Relic and Empyrean gear as well, which is easily sufficient.

I haven't played since August. More or less my entire LS wasn't keen on the iLevel direction and so on with SoA, and was planning to play ARR anyway. So everyone just kinda dropped off - which wasn't uncommon. There have been constant events (login points for free stuff, bonanzas, etc) to try and keep people subscribed. They're actually doing free play period during December as well (for previous subscribers).

Haven't really had the urge to go back yet. As I mentioned in the Together Retro thread, if there are folks interested in playing XI I'd be happy to reactivate and help get them going, but I'm not too keen on paying $25/account to move my characters off of Asura.

So, FF13 will eventually open up and be more like a normal JRPG at some point then? I ask because I plan on giving it as a gift to my brother who loves the end game and battle systems of Final Fantasy's past. I sure he wouldn't mind a bit of a departure from the norm, but so far FF13 isn't a slight departure, it's an entirely different fucking train.

As a side note he will also be getting Lost Odyssey, so it won't be all bad.
