Jumping into DS "hacking"

I'm a noob when it comes to this, I mean back in highschool the closest I got was using project 64 on my laptop to run some of my fav N64 games. So I have no idea what to do, where to start and even how to go about doing it.

I'd like to at some point be able to grab a card, pop it in and play all the NES games out there or SNES games and so on.

Do I need to be a super genius to know how to do this or is it somewhat easy even a brain dead monkey could figure it out?

Off topic, sure, but why not hack the PSP? It's insanely easy to do.

I'm pretty sure there are some guides on the main page for NES and Genesis emulators on the DS. Bottom line is you need a flash cart to run them. These typically take a mini or micro SD card for storage, and interface it to the DS's slot 1 (there were some older ones that ran from Slot 2 I think) in such a way that the DS knows what to do with the DS-specific files you put on the SD card.

For SNES the emulators that were available weren't very good when I looked (several years ago), but I'm not sure people were still working on them very much given that the PSP was better for that and the DSi, 3DS and other systems appeared (including very powerful smartphones and tablets).

Unless you have your heart dead-set on modding the DS, I would at least look into what each handheld can emulate. The PSP is an easier mod, and can emulate more games than the DS.

The article is from 2008, but I think most of the info is still relevant today. There have been updates to emulators and to R4-type cards in the past 5 years. Reading this article should give you a good idea of the basics.

I think folks here are just trying to inform. The point isn't to fork away from the conversation, but to deepen it. The OP mentions wanting to play SNES games, and the DS is a poor choice for this.

I would feel that this forum failed if all we did was google the question for the OP, and let him/her just mod away without knowing downsides/alternatives.

Find the latest R4.

There are older versions out there, but newer ones are obviously better. Better compatibility and larger flash memory support.

This website has most everything you would need to play older games on your newer system
