Out Run and Space Harrier for Saturn Not Working

Post by Original_Name »

Strange problem, guys -- every game I have for Saturn works except for these two. The games are in good condition, but they won't work with my new Saturn. Out Run can't make it past the Out Run-specific Sega logo -- it just freezes there. Space Harrier gets past the start screen, but the gameplay lags to the point of unplayability as soon as enemy sprites appear on screen -- music skips, too.

Even though they were in good condition, I had assumed it must be the discs. I ordered another copy of Out Run and it has the exact same problem. Very strange. These games worked on my previous Saturn, a US Model 2 with Action Replay, but they don't work on my new (to me) Japanese Model 2. I had thought that perhaps, by chance, I had picked up a model of the Saturn with an odd, undocumented issue which causes it to have issues playing the Sega Ages line of games, but Fantasy Zone works just fine. I also tried playing without the 4MB Ram cartridge, but it made no difference.

Does anyone have any ideas about this? Very odd issue -- seems to be hardware oriented, yet it's kind of incredible that out of the 20-something games I've played since I've noticed the issue with these two, none of them are having any such issues.

maybe a memory save issue, try and see if there is corrupted data in the save files.
Or maybe the memory is full and you need some empty space perhaps.

I had a Japanese Model 2 at one point and it didn't work with Space Harrier either. I believe it's just a hardware compatibility issue.

It's a compatibility problem with later models of the console.

Well what a pain. Those are two of my favorite games, and all the other arcade-perfect versions of Space Harrier do that terrible auto-centering thing.

I read an interview with some of the Sega Ages staff not too long ago and they mentioned that they had to use a unique work-around that involved pulling power from the sound driver in order to display extra graphics or something along those lines. I wonder if that's the root of the issue.

Interesting, would love to see the source of that theory. I love Out Run.

Wow, I had never heard of that project -- really cool stuff!!

Actually, I had completely misremembered, it was the PlayStation 2 port which used the I/O Processor to drive the FM sound. So I can't really imagine why there would be a compatibility issue...
