My version of Black Friday was hitting the thrifts after running errands this morning. I was shocked to see an SNES for $13 (w/ Mickey Mania, 1 controller, RF switch, no power cord) at a particular thrift store that regularly prices broken Xboxes for $20 and working PS2s for $70. It wasn't even in their glass case!
Also found a complete Xbox at Goodwill for the irresistible price of $6. I pretty much assume any Xbox is faulty when I see one but for $6 I'm willing to gamble and it paid off. It works great. One caveat- I have noticed from past experience that the thrift stores in my area only put "As Is - No Returns" stickers on consoles that they test and find to be broken (the sneaky bastards). This one had such a sticker so my expectations were low. The Xbox just happened to have a crap game inside that was scratched to shit and wouldn't read. It does read good discs though. Lucked out there, I guess.
Also, I didn't even bother to look until I got home because I was so happy to have found a Super Nintendo at a thrift store (rarely happens for me) but the plastic prong on the power input was broken. It did work otherwise though. Sadly, this poor SNES gave it's life as a parts donor for two other SNES' I had lying around with various issues. It will be remembered as a hero.

I noticed many of you pick up below average games on old consoles. Do you plan to play them or you just picked them up because they had a very low price tag?

I mainly buy games that I know I am going to play or that I know I can flip or trade for some more games. However there are some systems like the Atari 2600 that have games so cheap that I am actually going for a complete set and am even collecting variants for.

Complete sets of Atari 2600 and NES are virtually impossible.
I'd say an NES set minus the Nintendo World Championships and Stadium Events is doable I suppose. Still insanely difficult but possible.
Atari 2600 just has way too much crazy rare expensive shit like Air Raid, Red Sea Crossing, Video Life, Pepsi Invaders, etc...

With NES, you can make things a bit more reasonable and stick to just licensed games. There's also the fact that what was released on the console is very well documented at this point.
That's one of the issues with Atari 2600, nobody's actually certain what all actually came out for it. There just isn't that sort of documentation out there, hence why stuff like Air Raid has popped up in the past.
In either case, though, I'd say shooting for a full set is more about the journey than the destination anyway.
