While I think it is a bit ridiculous, they do control over access to your Live service and video sharing capabilities. It is mostly there to protect their own asses.
Fixed!

Because he spent his entire time here being an antagonistic asshole and throwing a fit when he got called out on it?
Was he? I often disagreed with the guy, but don't remember him being a complete knucklehead.

Because RetroDude was very passionate about what he likes, to the point that he'd sometimes take it a bit too personally.

And I don't know if you noticed yet, but a lot of the regulars around here just LOVE to give snarky smart-ass responses to people as often as humanly possible.

So the two just didn't mix well, at all.

As a serious reply to anything going on here, I don't see the issue with banning people for being asshats, which is what this seems to actually be (rather than is sensationalized as).

So let's say you're playing Halo online. You're racking up a nice string of kills. Then you turn a corner and someone suddenly shoots you in the face and you're dead. You then say "Shit!" in the heat of the moment.

The next time you turn on your Xbox, you can't access a damn thing because you're account was banned because you said "Shit!". And you just paid $400 for your new XBox One that you can no longer access online.

There is no way that that is not an extreme reaction. A warning or something similar would be acceptable, but not an automatic ban. Of if the person was an obvious troll, then it would be warranted. But simply saying "Cussing gets you banned," with a zero-tolerance policy is ridiculous.

But this isn't the case. Did you read the article? The users were banned from using Upload for a period of time because they were uploading video with swearing. It wasn't because you swore in an Xbox Live chat.
Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.

Exactly. You have to realize that any video you upload on the Upload Studio is immediately view-able from the game's Store page. It's one thing for a person to buy COD or BF4 and get bombarded by swear words, as at that point, you are already adhering to the ESRB rating of the content you purchased. But by just visiting the game's product page, you wouldn't expect to see unfiltered content there.

For lack of a better example, do you see gameplay/review videos on Amazon.com/Gamestop which contain swearing? Can you imagine watching a gameplay video in Bestbuy where the player is swearing? Of course not.
If you aren't having a good time, why are you playing?

Did you watch the video (it wasn't even an article, funny enough)? This seems to be the 2nd time I've pointed this out on this thread.

It was said that cussing on Xbox Live at all is causing bans. And that Skype videos are being monitored and Xbox videos with cussing in it are among the things being reported. The reason the focus was on Skype was because it's causing not only Xbox Live accounts to be banned, but also Skype accounts.

Stark is talking about http://www.polygon.com/2013/11/25/51435 ... r-swearing which Dave posted. It's the actual journalism follow-up to the sensationalist video that you're referring to.
