The day before any holiday in the past my school has shown a movie to the kids to celebrate. Most of the kids have already seen the movie and are so excited for the days off school, the movie is counterproductive for all. (I also hate wasting class time to watch a movie - I can come up with relevant and interesting hands on labs).
So last year I instituted a school wide Turkey Trot the afternoon before Thanksgiving. This involves the students, all of them grades 5-8, getting out of class and running/jogging/walking a mile. The first place boy and girl for each grade gets a photo op with a frozen turkey that gets donated to the local food bank in their name. Last year this went well - I had almost every teacher standing out on the course watching, helping pick the winners, pinning on race bibs and passing out donated snacks. It was a success... and it was almost 60 degrees out.
This year it is predicted to have a high of 31 and 6 inches of snow on the ground. Which sucks. What sucks more is that I made it a bigger deal this year - I got sponsors and sold t-shirts sending all the profit to the food bank, but the weather may bite us in the butt.
After a long setup here is the part that makes me smile: I have received permission to run tomorrow as long as its over 20 degrees, but we are not going to keep the "everybody must participate" mantra from last year. I think running/playing in the snow would be fun... so here is keeping my fingers crossed that the Turkey Trot doesn't make my "ticked off" post on Wed. Maybe if this is successful, Ill change the name from the cliche "Turkey Trot" to something like the "Tough Turkey".

All that other shit is just cloyingly sweet and ruins the flavor. I yam serious.
Yeah, I'm with you. They are called sweet potatoes for a reason. All that extra stuff isn't necessary.

Yup.MrPopo wrote: It doesn't even require much time. One sack of cranberries, one cup of water, 1/2 cup sugar. Bring water+sugar to a boil, add the cranberries, cover and simmer for 10 minutes.
Yup. Maybe a pat of butter, but that isn't even needed.the King wrote:BoneSnapDeez wrote:Sweet potatoes are fine on their own.

And a wag of my finger to anyone who doesn't eat the potato's skin. Shame on you.

Sounds pretty fun. It's nice to get the kids active. When I used to work at an elementary school we had "Walking Wednesday" where the kids would walk from a local park to the school every Wednesday morning.SpaceBooger wrote:The day before any holiday in the past my school has shown a movie to the kids to celebrate. Ya know, I've done hundreds of road races in my life, but never a "Turkey Trot". Probably because of the uncomfortably cold weather in Maine this time of year.

Supersmile: One quiz to take in an hour then break starts! Woo!
Frown: I worked out for the first time in a good two months last night. Turns out that you really do lose if you don't use it and man am I hurting today for it.

Older. Not wiser.

Smile: Wife's Birthday is today and so far she's already had two birthday parties, one surprise party, and a truck load of gifts. Taking it a bit easy tonight; I still have a few more gifts for her, I'll cook her a roasted duck and pineapple curry that she oh so adores, and then we'll probably watch one of her favorite movies (hoping she picks Charlotte's Web) and I'll give her a nice massage.
Frown: Not sure what wine to pair with a sweet but overall spicy curry.
edit*
Huge Smile: I posted "What woman wouldn't love getting a K&W gift card on her Birthday?" on my Facebook page and the responses have been hilarious. Obviously some of my friends are running with the joke and others think I'm being serious and are offering advice. This will make my day.

The internet recommends a gewurztraminer or riesling. I usually find those unbearably sweet, however; so, depending on your tastes you also might want to consider an American viognier. (You might also consider an American rose or, if you want to go with a red wine, a zinfandel.)Luke wrote:Frown: Not sure what wine to pair with a sweet but overall spicy curry.
