A couple of thoughts.
First, no reason to even bring up the rejects from TR here. If someone wants to re-nominate those games, go ahead.
Second, I'd be fine with a "dungeon crawlers" category. Problem is if we do this the genres start to get hazy/overlapping. Dungeon Explorer is a dungeon crawler and an action-RPG. Wizardry is a dungeon crawler and WRPG. Arcana is a dungeon crawler and JRPG. And so on. I proposed "roguelike" as a fifth category some time ago - as that sub-genre is clearly defined. Though I don't know how much interest in those sorts of games exists here. I guess "dungeon crawlers/roguelikes" could be a single category, as long as we clearly define the parameters up front.
As far as voting and whatnot goes, things seemed to go really smoothly last time. I say we just roll the same way this time out. Get nominations for each sub-genre, vote, highest number of votes wins...

Re: Together RPG - Schedule & Discussion
A dungeon crawler can mean any game involving traveling through a labyrinthine environment while fighting monsters and taking treasure, generally using complex mechanics such as those used in tabletop role playing games like Dungeons & Dragons. Nowadays the term is generally applied to first-person games which feature a grid-like level layout and can be manually mapped on graph paper. Rogue in the strictest sense is a dungeon crawler, but its randomization of layout has spawned a separate subgenre, the Roguelike, and it does not meet the first-person view now associated with the term. An example of a game that could be considered Roguelike but that also fits the older idea for dungeon crawler would be Castle of the Winds, which features randomized dungeon layouts and loot/enemy locations throughout the map but again falls short of the current first person view.noiseredux wrote:As far as Dungeon Crawler, can you help define that a bit? I know stuff like Shin Megami Tensei is considered a Dungeon Crawler, right? Is Rogue a Dungeon Crawler, or am I confusing?

We should do Eye of the Beholder. Dave and I both had that on our Summer Gaming lists, and I don't think either of us even tried it.
Re: Together RPG - Schedule & Discussion
oh god, please not that Zelda. I suppose that would be my due desserts if that's the Zelda we end up with since I introduced the idea and all, but I'd likely sit out OoT if it got voted as it is not one I enjoy in the least. I feel like Spirit Tracks is much more a hidden gem.mjmjr25 wrote: +1 Zelda Ocarina of Time

Dave is just trolling now so ignored.noiseredux wrote:same order? So you are limiting it to a cycle of the same handful of sub-genres then?Jmustang1968 wrote: If we followed the same order Noise, SRPG would be up again I believe. Shining force 2 was our first game.
Alright so what is the order then? At least SRPG is a sub-genre I enjoy a lot.
Are you aiming solely for retro? There's Shadowrun Returns I'm dying to play. I don't know if you'd call it an SRPG or just a Tactical game though.
Well I think we went with subgenres that really encompass all rpgs. They were just implemented that way to mix things up so we didnt play the same type of game 2 or 3 games in a row.
Last year we went SRPG, JRPG, WRPG, Action RPG.
I don't care if we stay retro or not. Though I suspect some participants prefer sticking to retro. That would be reflected in the game vote per genre I suspect.
Shadowrun Returns would fall under both SRPG and WRPG.
How we format the next games is under discussion. I asked if we should go with the same struxture or vary it up a bit.

Re: Together RPG - Schedule & Discussion
how would the calendar run for SRPG? If Shadowrun Returns got picked, I'd def join in. Though January is PSO for TR, so I'll be focused on that for the month. :\

Only partly (e.g. COD). I do think most of my ideas are good ones. I suppose if you ignore me I will have to start ignoring the club.Jmustang1968 wrote:

You do realize by excluding games like Legend of Zelda, it also helps spurn discussion of what the RPG genre actually contains though, right?dsheinem wrote:Only partly (e.g. COD). In fact, haven't we had several threads on just that topic?

There are people who don't consider Zelda an RPG?
