Well, this gamer is finally taking the plunge :)

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

We went to a fancy-ish restaurant for our two year anniversary (dating). We had amazing meals and some nice wine and then I excused myself to go the restroom. I then had eleven of the waitstaff each walk through the restaurant carrying a red rose to the table and placing it in front of her. I followed the last one, carrying the twelfth rose. I placed it front of her, pulled the ringbox from my pocket, dropped to a knee and proposed. She said yes (we'd also talked favorably of eventual marriage previously) and people in the restaurant stood up and gave us a nice ovation. I also had a friend record the whole thing (on S-VHS  ). It was nerve-wracking, sure - but it made a nice moment.

I purchased a low-mid priced ring from Zales, and she was quite happy with it. I was a poor M.A. student. I figure for our 25th or something I'll get her something really impressive, but you don't want a woman who will judge you on the size/cost of the ring you buy (as if that is representative of your feelings).

I proposed on Valentines Day (cliche I know :? ). But, I took her out to a nice dinner, we shopped, watched a movie, and just a nice evening together. We usually exchange gifts, but hadn't yet. So, once we got home I had her close her eyes and walk into the house. I lead her to the living room where I had hundreds tea light candles all over the place, a huge bouquet of roses on the table inside of a big heart made of tea lights. Also I had a really nice dessert waiting. When she opened her eyes she was dumb founded. Her eyes were super wide with aw. It was great. After a second I took the ring out of my pocket....slid it on her finger. Said something along the lines of "You are the greatest thing that has ever happened to me. I love you more than anything and want us to spend the rest of our lives together. So, will you marry me?"

Her teary eyed response was: "You put the ring on the wrong hand".

She eventually said yes

Also, congratulations OP. Marriage is like most anything, it needs time, attention, and maintenance. without those things it gets worn out and falls apart. It is totally what you make it though.

My wife wanted a marquis cut stone, and I was given a ring of her mothers to take the diamonds out of to include (six baguette and six princess cut - all super tiny [donating ring was a jacket ring]). So I went to my mothers jeweler and designed it. They liked my design for everything except the bar across the stone. It took two months to have enough stones come in for a decision and I picked one just shy of a caret and with an imperfection that is under the a prong. Shortly after, when I went in to pay off the rest, I was offered a job at the jewelers if I wanted it. Marquis stones are damn expensive...

But the best part of my wedding (apart from being married and all), was the Zelda 1 cart I gave to my groomsmen. I hacked the rom and changed the story to be about how we met, and renamed the items to be the wedding party. Then I had a buddy of mine put it on NES carts. My groomsmen, aka my three brothers, thought it was awesome. And one of the Bridesmaids asked if she could have one instead of something girly.

Nothing says "marriage" quite like being corrected for all your little mistakes.

I've never been a fan of the surprise proposal thing. My philosophy is that marriage should be a mutual thing and should be discussed between the two in great depths, but everyone has different views on marriage and some women wouldn't want a proposal to not be a surprise so it all depends on your girl. Btw whats peoples thoughts on synthetic vs real diamonds? seems like a no brainer to go synthetic with the fact that they arenearly molecularly identical and a fraction of the price and you don't have to worry about it being a conflict diamond mined by miner minors.

I did nothing romantic. We were already living together and had been dating for like 9 or 10 years. I got the ring and was like marriage is next for us right? Yup. Yup. Ok cool.

He's lying. He hid the ring in his beard and then pulled it out one day after serenading her with his banjo. The stars were so bright that evening, he swore some kind of rocket ship flew past.
