Retro PSN?

Post by noiseredux »

Do you think the PSN library will ever branch out to non-Sony retro games? I mean the way that XBox Live Arcade or Wii Virtual Console has tons of games from different consoles? Anyone ever hear that as being planned?

Well, there's Mega Man 9, Bionic Commando: Rearmed and 1942: Joint Strike. I don't know about retro emulation, though.

There's a handful of others like MK2 and some SF Alpha games, though they aren't all that old relatively speaking.

Seems Sony wants cool new polished games on the service more than the older games. Nintendo at this point has most of the good old stuff. XBLA probably has the best overall mix. If there's a demand for old games I'm sure they'll try to fill it...

I do have to give credit to Microsoft here. The PSN has a good selection of "retro" titles, but Microsoft has a consistent and expanding library of old and new retro games.

Of course, a softmodded Wii will give you a near-perfect selection of emulators for you to create your own retro library. Unless you installed update 3.4, that is.

Well, really a softmodded PS2 (way cheaper) will give you a near perfect selection of emulators for you to create your own retro library as well.

I don't think Sony is too bothered about retro stuff on PSN - they seem to be going more for a mix of pick up and play arcade titles (PAIN, SuperStardust HD, The Last Guy etc), unique innovative stuff (PixelJunk Eden, Linger in Shadows, Echochrome, Everyday Shooter) and polished large-scope titles that could almost be full retail releases (GT5P, Warhawk, Wipeout HD, Siren, Fatal Inertia etc).

There are a handfull of PSX releases, but unfourtunatly SCEE & SCEA barely support these, citing poor sales as the reason behind a lack of PSX titles made available - it's not suprising, when you look at the meagre selection SCEA & SCEE offer (a couple of Crash Bandicoot games, the first Destruction Derby, Symphony of the Night, the first Coolboarders, Street Fighter Alpha Theme Hospital, Theme Park, Twisted Metal, Wipeout, Wild Arms, Driver etc) - compared to the SCEJ the lineup is really weak. PSX titles are consistantly at the top of the JP Store's charts, thanks to the great selection they have (pretty much everything the EU & NA stores have, plus a crap load of 2d fighters, puzzle games, classic RPGs & SHMUPS). Ideally i'd love to see Sony step up the PSX releases as there are a great number of awesome PSX games i'd love to be able to play from my PS3.
