My PS4 is pretty loud too. It's not terrible, but it's definitely noticeable. My Xbox One is silent, probably because of how huge that fan inside it is. There are some advantages to being massive :)

I'm still trying to figure out why the Xbox One is larger than the PS4 and still needs an external brick.

I think it's because of how it is being marketed and designed to be used. The Xbox One is being pushed as this high-end all-in-one AV device. It is meant to sit next to your receiver and control your living room. It seems like they were going for more of a receiver look and less of a game console look.

They also designed it to constantly be on. Between TV, gaming, working out, etc. it is expected to see some heavy use. Most people aren't marathon gamers, but they do watch a ton of TV. With the RROD debacle, Microsoft was probably paranoid about heat build up.

I personally couldn't care less about the power brick. Once I plug it in and slide it behind my entertainment center, I won't see it again for years (hopefully).

Well, so what? Most game companies sell their consoles at a loss or near-loss and then recoup the costs with software, online services, and accessories. Look at the PS2 and PS3, same deal.

Seems more like the point is the opposite. Sony isn't losing much money per PS4 compared to the hundreds per PS3 at launch.
