What do you think about Adblock?
What's your opinion on Adblock? I am a avid user of the program and support use of it.

Re: What do you think about Adblock?
I'd like the websites and content creators I enjoy to receive the revenue they deserve so I support not using it. Ho lawdy having to watch a 15 second ad to get free content is just so awful. How could anybody deal with such injustice?

I personally use it, simply because it came installed with the version of Firefox I downloaded. I've gotten really used to it though, and it can be pretty jarring to use a browser or other computers without it.

While they sometimes get to be too much, I don't really mind ads. What I do mind however, is when a video site fails to load a video but has the ad play perfectly. I end up refreshing the page and having to watch an ad again.

Re: What do you think about Adblock?
Since most sites don't host their own ads but rather outsource them, unedited and unmonitored, I use AdBlock Plus. I don't get jittery GIFs advertising products I'll never use. I also don't get tons of flash ads trying to drag down my browser. If sites screened their ads better to keep out malware and such and avoided flash ads, I'd be a lot more amenable to allowing their ads. But so long as ads attempt to overshadow and crowd out content, and so long as ads remain a conduit for malware infection, I will block, block, block.
I also use NoScript, which can make browsing a pain, but keeps me safe from many kinds of tracking AND most browser-based exploits.

Only time I'm bothered by ads is when they pop up with intrusive loud noises and/or video.
But yeah lots of sites depend on ad revenue to stay afloat. Even if I didn't care much about that, ads in general don't bother me enough to get an addon to stop it.

NoScript is pretty much a must.marurun wrote: I also use NoScript, which can make browsing a pain, but keeps me safe from many kinds of tracking AND most browser-based exploits.

Re: What do you think about Adblock?
Is there a way to get this on a tablet?
I am annoyed when I'm online and the ad on the website takes me directly to the Google app store.
Its a spamming tactic.
I hate it!
Or if any of you guys know a way to stop this, it would be much appreciated.

I don't know how you stop ads on the mobile internet but I do know how to kill off ads on all apps though. Just put on airplane mode.flojocabron wrote:Is there a way to get this on a tablet?

Re: What do you think about Adblock?
The big problem with this is that using an Adblocker forces a choice on the website. "I don't like how you do things so I'm going to make you give me your content the way I want to". It's a shitty thing to do, really.
I used Adblock briefly and turned it off because I simply don't feel confortable denying people from running their website how they see fit. Some gaming sites diclosed their numbers recently and less than half of their bandwith-eating readership actually earns them money, that's pretty bad.
If you think a site is annoying, don't visit it. It's not like your average youtuber or random site can negotiate an advertising deal so all you do is harm them. It's kind of nasty in a sense.
That said, I hope whoever invented noisy ads dies in a fire.

The worst: ads on download sites that are disguised as a big DOWNLOAD NOW button
