What, in your opinion, is the best game news/journal site?

Post by BoringSupreez »

I like reading about games. I like knowing the latest information about what goes on in the industry. For years Gamespot was my go-to site for that stuff. Not for their reviews (Giant Bomb and Gamefaqs user reviews are good enough for me) but for their press releases. As they became more and more concerned with social justice, violence, descrimination, etc., I started using Kotaku. However, after a few months of reading them I see that they're basically the same, although better written. IGN is useless because they're so frequently late with news. So what sites do you guys like to read for this stuff? I'd like a site that's not political (games are games, just leave the politics out please), but not late with their pieces either. I've heard Joystiq is decent, however I'd still like to hear your recommendations.

I used to read a bunch of other stuff, but I don't have time for that now so I just read what I like the most.

Video game journalism has awfully low standards. Some supposed "writers" can barely craft a complete sentence. Some supposed "journalists" will blatantly give a good review to a bland game (for the right price) without batting an eyelash.

Ars Technica's Opposable Thumbs is an island in the vast sea of poorly written video game journalism.

Rev3's Adam Sessler is the only man on Youtube who I trust to give an honest and intelligent opinion on the current state of video games

Mark from Classic Game Room gives lots of toungue-in-cheek reviews to video games by comparing modern gaming hardware against retro gaming hardware. Dual Shock 4 vs Atari Controller WiiU vs Vectrex.

I currently only follow Penny Arcade Report, and I only started that because I like to see their comics and commentary so it is only a click away. They do have a nice feature called "The Cut" where they link to other articles they found interesting, and I've been exposed to some stuff of places like Ars Technica and Gamasutra and such (which I would say are more specialized sites which often have game devs rather than game journalists writing) due to that.

I use Kotaku and Siliconera mostly. Kotaku is basically a tabloid site though. (FFvsXIII was totally canceled, amirite?) They report on "rumors" a little too much for my taste. But they keep current news updated faster than any other site I know of and with fewer ads. Also, they fix errors quickly and post lots of gaming and electronics deals.

Siliconera covers pretty much every significant Japanese gaming news announcement; and they keep pretty neutral on things. Although their writer that goes by the name "Ishaan" has a significant Nintendo bias... and that wouldn't bother me but he/she kind of clashes with the flow of the other writers. I don't even read that writer's articles anymore.

For now i'm enjoying polygon and rockpapershotgun (say what you want but so far are the only people i found who talk MAINLY on pc gaming).

The thing is that i don't check the sites, i suscrite to the facebook page of each and if they post a interesting article and i see it on my wall i visit it.

Also Screwattack (yeah they are still around) and Gamenesia (though they are a bit nintendo biased). those last two are ok but i wont count them as my main news source.

The only political thing that RPS hammers on about concerns gender and ethnic representation in video games. Admittedly when they do hit it, they hit it hard. But then you also have excellent pieces like the recent Warren Spector interview:

I find this ironic as I would lump Adam Sessler in with those of the low standards you speak of. He's an idiot.

As for me, I don't really follow most gaming sites much anymore. I mostly go with youtube channels, Player One Podcast, all gen gamers podcast, and gaming forums (such as this one) for thoughts on games. I don't consider most "journalists" to be real gamers. And their opinions are usually marked either by ignorance, bias, or simply them have a skewed view on things due to them being in the industry. For example, reviewers rushing through tons of games in order to meet review deadlines will tend to have harsher views on games than normal people who aren't playing under such stressful conditions.

I sometimes visit hardcoregaming101 when I want to know about more niche games. I check pocketgamer, gamerankings and gamefaqs daily just so I am aware of new video game releases. I also check out two best friends play on youtube when I want to see a game in action and have a laugh or two as well

IGN.com

They bring fresh and unadulterated content. My favorite thing about them is their reviews. I base all my purchases off of them.
