OK, it's not that dramatic, but we're looking at some games and follow-ups that IMPROVE on the original entry into the series.

Assassin's Creed by far is the game that most reminds me of the title.

As for other suggestions, I'd say Power Strike II. Both the GG and SMS versions (which are completely different). Gradius II for Famicom, or even Salamander/Life Force. Ranma 1/2 Super Battle versus Hard Battle on SFami. Final Soldier or Soldier Blade on PCE.
