In fact I just remembered. One of the deaths on Smash TV where your character explodes and all you see is an explosion of giblets and a single rotating eye rising toward the camera and then back down.
That was a really cool sprite and it was hand drawn pixel for pixel too!

Castlevania Symphony of the Night, Metal Slug series, and Bangai-O. All have excellent animations with sprites. Bangai-O isn't really "animated' per say, but the chaos it produces all in 2D is just marvelous.
