I don't know how I feel about the Oldboy remake. I'm not one of those nutso fans that hates it by default, but I am a big Oldboy fan. I don't mean to sound like a weeb here. But I'm not confident that an American can really understand the Japanese values behind Oldboy and properly convey them. I've never seen a Spike Lee movie either, so I don't know how to factor that into the whole thing either.

Basically, if it's a goofy American-ized popcorn flick version of Oldboy, I will think it's shit. But I am reserving judgement and hoping for the best.

I doubt it will be an "Americanized popcorn flick", but I'm not sure how it will compare to the original values wise, as I have yet to watch the whole thing. I imagine Spike will do a pretty good job of it either.

Korean, but I understand what you mean. I'm always hesitant about a remake. I think Spike Lee and Josh Brolin are highly capable, but I admit that I worry, especially when I hear noise like this that the studio is stepping in to change things.

Wait... I thought that they said it was going to be based on the manga and not the Korean movie. I am pretty out of the loop with it though, I looked into it when it was but a rumor, but haven't looked into it much since it came to fruition. If it's a remake of the movie, I have even less hope.

Oh, did they? I thought it was directly based on the film.

Spike Lee said "I like the comic covers for Oldboy" and some people took it to mean the movie would be based off manga. Fairly certain it's not.

MERLIN'S SHOP OF MYSTICAL WONDERS.

One of favorite MST3K episodes as Ernest Borgnine was born to be mst3k'd. It's on youtube, in full if you're interested, and if you are a fan of mst3k, it is a must see. It is TIME CHASERS funny.

OldBoy is an amazing movie. When I saw they're making a remake I didn't know what to think. I tend to always have a false hope that it will be as good as the origional but obviously I'm let down. Maybe it'll be a good movie for it's own unique reasons though.

Awesome. I will definitely check it out. (I think I will download the Youtube application for my Wii tonight since I really want to see this and Gymkata, which is also available for streaming there.) That said, Netflix added a bunch of MST3K episodes back yesterday, which has me excited. (My wife does not want to watch them sith me, however... :? )

Speaking of Netflix, it has really added some great movies recently. My wife and I streamed Frances Ha (2012), the other day. (It was great, BTW...like a modern version of Woody Allen's Manhattan stirred together with a generous helping of Truffaut and Godard's lightest works.) We also watched The American (2010). (It is a very slow-burn thriller that borrower heavily from Sergio Leone and Mario Bava. I loved it, but my wife hated it.) Netflix has also added Computer Chess (2013) and Europa Report (2013), and I am very excited to see both movies.

.....

With regard to the Oldboy remake, I am cautiously optimistic. Spike Lee is a great director, and his best work certainly deserves respect. I think he can pull-off a re-imagining of the original, but I am concerned that the studio stripped out what sounds like an incredible tracking shot...

FRANCES HA is superb.

As far as MST3K goes, I generally lean towards the one where they "critique" movies that are actually watchable. MANOS HANDS OF FATE is hilarious, but funnies aside the movie is theatrical Nyquil.

In some ways I actually prefer Rifftrax due to that. Granted, there aren't really the non-movie segments, but far fewer of the movies are difficult to sit through on their own.
