And if you named Solid Snake "Jeff", and called it "That one military stealth game", the same would apply.brunoafh wrote:Well all you fellas can head on down to the Batman subforum and post there.BurningDoom wrote:So me and Gamerforlife are far from alone on it.![]()
Jokes aside, I feel like most of the hype for the series is just because it's Batman. Call the game "That Weird Asylum Across Town" and make the main character some guy named Jeff, I predict it doesn't get nearly as popular.

Metal Gear Solid established itself. It's not based on anything... I think you missed the point of what I was getting at.BurningDoom wrote:And if you named Solid Snake "Jeff", and called it "That one military stealth game", the same would apply.

The point being that it's somehow only good because it has Batman.brunoafh wrote:Metal Gear Solid established itself. It's not based on anything... If that was the case, then Batman: Dark Tomorrow would have been a Greatest Hits title.

Do we really want to get into all of Metal Gear Solid's influences? It's not exactly original itself, just because it doesn't use an established license doesn't change that fact that it's borrowing from tons of things in our pop culture. Truthfully, Snake is one of the most cliché characters ever created in any entertainment medium
Oh, and anyone who plays Batman by just mashing one button over and over is doing it wrong. That's not how you build high scores, big combos, and finish fights without taking any damage.
Sadly, that is how 90% of players play the game though

To me, Metal Gear embodies much of what's wrong with Japanese games today and why they are not more popular. So many of them have bad design and odd control schemes yet the hardcore fans keep making excuses or apologies for them. Not to mention pretentious, convoluted, melodramatic stories, which is pretty much what MGS is all about, like a lot of Japanese games
MGS is a fine example of dated game making. The Batman games are more forward thinking, intuitive and logical

No, the point being that it wouldn't have the reputation that it does if it was a new IP.BurningDoom wrote:The point being that it's somehow only good because it has Batman.
Influence is completely different than licensed games.Gamerforlife wrote:Do we really want to get into all of Metal Gear Solid's influences
Unbelievably, it might just be because we enjoy the games, and not everyone has your superior and refined taste. People like different things for different reasons, there's nothing wrong with that.Gamerforlife wrote:So many of them have bad design and odd control schemes yet the hardcore fans keep making excuses or apologies for them.

I agree about Metal Gear, but don't see how this applies to Japanese games in general.Gamerforlife wrote:To me, Metal Gear embodies much of what's wrong with Japanese games today and why they are not more popular. Kid: Mortal Kombat, on Sega Genesis, is the best video game ever.
Billy Madison: I disagree, it's a very good game, but I think Donkey Kong is the best game ever.
Kid: Donkey Kong sucks.
Billy Madison: You know something? YOU SUCK!

But the tone of this discussion since it started has been how could anyone compare those silly Batman games to the modern Shakespeare that is Metal Gear Solid, and that irritated me a bit. I don't really care when people say they like MGS. It's just the way people place them on this pedestal like literary classics and get kind of snooty about them that boggles my mind when they have so many obvious flaws
But whatever, we're way off topic and we clearly have different opinions, which is fine. That's always going to happen when people discuss the games they love. Me and BurningDoom just like our Batman games more
The way I look at MGS is how I look at the Simpsons. It's this aging dinosaur that just needs to be put down already. I can't believe yet another game is being made. Just how I feel about it. And to be fair, I've started getting a little sour on Batman too with Arkham Origins. I blame that on the new dev team though

That's just how I feel though, I didn't post it to piss anyone off. Except I wouldn't call the Batman games silly, I really liked Arkham Asylum. I just see MGS on another level.
Honestly this I agree with completely. I lost interest after 4, and I have zero interest in the new games. It's the MSX games and the original trilogy specifically that I hold in high regard. The way I look at MGS is how I look at the Simpsons. Anyway, this is all Luke's fault for dragging Metal Gear into it.
