I don't think the Batman games play anything at all like the MGS games.
I also think they are ten times better than every MGS game I've ever played. The stories are not a convoluted mess and the Batman games actually have good controls. Plus, they actually have fun stealth gameplay, unlike every single MGS game I've ever played. The Batman games are FAR better designed and polished. I wouldn't put the MGS series in Batman's league.
It's all hype with MGS. The Batman games will hold up much better over time when people are looking back and wondering how people put up with MGS's crap controls and gameplay and ridiculous storylines the likes of which only television's Lost could compare.
MGS is novelty and shock value. It's that same what the fuck factor that makes people love Suda51 games so much. Not saying that's a bad thing or that I haven't enjoyed the MGS series, but there's a certain level of craftmanship to the way Batman games are designed while MGS games are pretty sloppy. MGS 3 was a complete mess of a game in terms of design until they re-released it as Subsistence. The story was good though, much more focused and coherent than most MGS stories

It's going on 30 years and it's still hailed as one of the greatest gaming franchises of all time, by a large number of people at that. Pretty sure that's not going to change.Gamerforlife wrote:It's all hype with MGS. Metal Gear Solid 2 is the only one with a convoluted story. It was very intentionally done this way though, so not sure if I could call it a flaw. In fact, most of the stuff you are saying seems to be stuff that makes me think of Metal Gear Solid 2. The only reason Western gamers were confused by Metal Gear Solid initially is because barely anyone had played the first two games.
This post would be funny if I still had Snake as my avatar.

Sure it's hailed as one of the greatest, but much of that is just fond nostalgia. When people PLAY them again years from now I think they'll be less impressed as the MGS series has always had really dated controls and hit and miss design, at least in my opinion. Batman games just play more intuitively
I don't hate the series, much as it probably sounds like it. It's just when you put two heavyweights against each other I have to pick a side, and like BurningDoom I like the Batman franchise better. I don't think I'm alone in feeling that MGS games have convoluted stories. It's a pretty common complaint for the series, but you're right MGS 2 is the biggest example. I won't argue that point

Re: Games Beaten 2013
Even when it was new, MGS bored me to tears. Very slow and methodical gameplay, coupled with way too many movie scenes. I did beat it, but it's one I never want to go back to again. I played MGS 2, got part way through it, never did beat it.
Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, on the other hand, kept me glued to the screen until it ended. I couldn't wait to get back to the game in-between play sessions.

MGS's storyline, especially taking in to account the franchise as a whole, is a batshit insane convoluted mess and I wouldn't have it any other way.
...and I quite enjoy that "slow, methodical" gameplay.

I just played through Metal Gear Solid like a month or two back, and I wouldnt describe the gameplay as slow or methodical at all.AppleQueso wrote:MGS's storyline, especially taking in to account the franchise as a whole, is a batshit insane convoluted mess and I wouldn't have it any other way.

The later games maybe, but MGS 1 is more action than stealth.

I was kinda taking the series as a whole, but even then I wouldn't go as far as to call MGS1 "more action than stealth."alienjesus wrote:I just played through Metal Gear Solid like a month or two back, and I wouldnt describe the gameplay as slow or methodical at all.AppleQueso wrote:MGS's storyline, especially taking in to account the franchise as a whole, is a batshit insane convoluted mess and I wouldn't have it any other way.

But in a lot of ways it depends on how you play it I suppose.

You bet. In MGS it is possible to pop a few caps, run and hide, go back out and pop a few more...or you can plan out an attack with your tranq gun without being seen for almost the entire game.
MGS is one of the few stealth games that doesn't bore me to tears. Part of the reason is that the story is constantly moving and giving you something to do besides sneak around.

Yeah every time I replay MGS (any of the MGS games really) I find some new way of getting through an area that I didn't know about before.
