I've heard amazing things about it, but haven't got around to even opening my copy yet. My list was in no particular order, but I definitely have a lot of love for Demon's Souls and Dark Souls both (beating Dark Souls was a triumph for me after dying on the last boss at least 25 times). I can't wait for Dark Souls II to come out in March!

I am shocked that no one has mentioned Portal yet.
Portal...eh. While nice and amusing, and even made me use my brain, and had great black humor (I love black humor...i'm very twisted), it's not really one of my top games. I played it half way through....left it for a half a year, picked the game back up, finished it and went...meh. Portal 2 was even more of a let down, funny in places but none of the real...punch the first had, not to mention that...ending.

These are only from what I've played, many of the games you guys have listed are ones I aim to play soon:

1. Rayman Origins (Wii) - Completed this with the wife, it's the perfect combination of accessible gameplay, challenging level design and collectibles. Love it.
2. Fallout 3 (X360) - one of my favourite games ever, was probably the last chance I could sink a lot of time in to games before becoming a parent!
3. Splinter Cell: Conviction (X360) - purely because of the excellent online co-op mode, as well as the Hunter mode, spent endless hours with a friend conquering that mode.
4. Bayonetta (X360) - Never actually completed this, but remember it fondly.
5. Saints Row 2 (X360) - Found this infinitely more enjoyable than GTA4, with its ridiculous mini-games like throwing your character under moving vehicles to claim insurance money. It actually felt more like GTA than GTA did.
6. Burnout: Revenge (X360) - Possibly the greatest racing I've played. The online mode back in 2006 was simply brilliant, and there was so much to do. I felt Paradise just wasn't the same, taking things down the Test Drive Unlimited route.
7. Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii) - Another one I played with the other half. Difficult but rewarding nonetheless.
I spent a lot of time on the Wii versions of Resident Evil 4, Twilight Princess and Pikmin 2 also, but I suppose they would be void. I need to start playing more modern games!
Currently playing Splinter Cell: Blacklist

Like others, I haven't played a lot of important games from this gen yet, but here in no particular order are 10 that I really liked:

1 - Rock Band - Greatly expanded the horizons for what encompasses "video gaming." This was the ultimate social way to game for many years. I wish more people still played it honestly.

2 - Fallout 3 - I came nowhere close to finishing this one but I absolutely loved the setting and the scope of this game. I definitely plan to revisit this one soon.

3 - Skyrim - Another massive game that could singlehandedly eat up months of gaming time. Beautiful to look at and listen to. Freedom to be and do whatever you wanted.

4 - Alan Wake - A fun game with a good story and interesting mechanics. My wife was interested in this one too.

5 - Warioware Twisted - Everything that I loved about previous Warioware games now for the Wii. Great music, fun and frantic gameplay. Of course, shaking the controller wildly would win 40-50% of the microgames but who cares?

6 - Orange Box/Portal - HL2 technically made it out for the original Xbox otherwise it would have it's own entry here. I came for the Half Life episodes but fell in love with Portal along the way.

7 - Gran Turismo V - With the recent acquisition of a Logitech G25 wheel set and a PS3 I've been playing a lot of GTV and find it to be wonderfully realistic and deep.

8 - Minecraft - My son came home talking about this game, but I figured it wasn't my kind of game. Once he started playing it I couldn't stop watching it. I finally jumped in with my own game and really got into it for a while. What a wonderful, relaxing (at least during the day) and interesting experience it was. I had dreams about Minecraft after a few late night sessions. I always know a game will stick with me when I dream about it.

9 - Walking Dead - Blended the line between TV and Video Games. You spend a lot of time watching and you can't really lose. However you are far from a passive viewer as you have to make some hard decisions that impact the storyline, sometimes significantly.

10 - COD IV Modern Warfare - The last COD game that was really lauded by the "cool" kids of gaming. I remember that people were falling all over themselves praising this game's story and presentation (in addition to the multiplayer of course). I never really bothered with online as I didn't want to invest the time, but the campaign included some highly memorable moments including a detonated nuke and the infamous bombing missions.

Mine are in no particular order.

1. The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim- While this may be a watered-down version of the elder Scrolls games, it just sucked me in completely. I've never had any game do that as well as this one did. I've played for well over a thousand hours and I still play it. It's just way too much fun.

2. Red Dead Redemption- This game truly defined my online gaming experience this generation. There really needs to be more games with online features like this one.

3. Dark Souls- Everyone talks about how OMG HARD this game is. I never really thought about it like that. It's just a game that forces you to think about every single action that you take... which isn't a bad thing at all. It changed the way I play games, and for the better.

4. Catherine- Fun, ridiculous story and fun gameplay? That's all I need in a game!

5. Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey- This is probably he darkest game that I played on the DS, or really any Nintendo handheld at the time. Everything about it is just perfect too. It's definitely in my top three MegaTen games.

This is the generation where indie really began to matter on a large scale, on both PC and console. My best of list would include more indie games than blockbusters, but just to ramble out some of my favorite indies:

Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Barkley: Shut Up and Jam Gaiden
Braid
Cave Story
FTL
Geometry Wars
Gridrunner Revolution
Hotline Miami
Jamestown
Minecraft
Nitronic Rush
SpaceChem
Shatter
Spelunky
Super Hexagon
Super Meat Boy
To The Moon
VVVVVV
World of Goo
Zeno Clash

Too bad my HD crapped out so I can't play some of my illegally downloaded Wii games D:

I'm thinking of stopping my playthrough of some older titles and digging through the 7th gen myself. I'll make a list of what I have played, but I haven't played a lot of 360/PS3 stuff and basically none of the handheld games.

I still can't pick easily I have a list going a bit though and I felt like typing a few of these out. I am trying to keep it to games that were on console only/have console versions which makes it a bit harder since most of my favorite games over the last 7 years have been PC games. It also doesn't help that the 7th generation lasted so long. It makes it really hard to make sure you're not forgetting that amazing game that came out on the PS3 over five years ago.

The Witcher 2

Probably the pinnacle of Western action-RPG design. The combat could be clunky but the world and dialog (as well as the influence you have in it) really solidified it as one of the best RPGs of all time even.

Batman Arkham Asylum

Here we have a comic license put to use in the hands of a developer that could really explore it's possibility in a game. The combat, while smooth and satisfying and definitely Batman, was not the real star of the show. Instead, the location, world, and story are what really shine.

Warhawk

In the early days of the PS3 the online support and selection was about as good as the Wii U has it now. That is to say it was a giant pile of awful. Then along comes Warhawk in 2007; a Battle-field esque game centered around brilliantly agile and equally fragile warplanes in beautiful large maps filled with artillery and jeeps and everything you could possibly want in a large battlefield. As I recall, it was one of the first games on PS3 to really support headsets and was also the only online game worth playing for quite a long while. It ate up hundreds of hours of my time when I first bought a PlayStation 3. Even the sequel, Starhawk, couldn't live up to the awesomeness of the original. People still populate a few servers to this day as well, and the game's ability to use a PS3 as a dedicated server for others to play on means the game wont die anytime soon.

The Orange Box

Another 2007 release that gave us not only the wonderful Half Life 2: Episode 2 but also spawned quirky puzzle title Portal, and the insanely popular Team Fortress 2. Bundled with the rest of the Half Life 2 saga on a single disc, this was arguably the best value in gaming this generation, giving you hours and hours of entertainment and three new games for the price of one.

Rayman Origins

Who would have thought that a Rayman game would come out so many years after the license had fallen into a rut of crappy rehashes of Rayman 2 and people would be singing it praises? Beyond being simply one of the most beautiful 2D games to come out ever, it also happened to have the mechanics and challenge to back up its pretty face. It was perhaps one of the biggest surprises this generation and what a surprise it was for a platformer lover such as myself.
Older. Not wiser.
