In no particular order:
1. Skyward Sword - Wii - A very Dinotopia styled Zelda game. So two of my favorite properties combined.
2. Mario Galaxy - Wii - Simple joy in game form
3. Professor Layton Curious Village - DS - One of the best puzzle games with a story I have ever played, I have not liked a sequel.
4. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Echoes of Time - DS/Wii - a 4 player loot driven ARPG that is cross play compatible, online, and has branching paths. I have one of each character type at max level. This was simply the best game for my friend group at the time, and the reason why we almost all own DSiXLs.
5. Mario Kart DS - DS - Take MarioKart 64, add more tracks, more characters, and online. If I could get it to run multiplayer on an emulator it would be perfect.
6. Castle Crashers - PC/360/PS3 - One of my favorite beatemups of all time, simple to play, loads of fun. Aslong as you dont plan on grinding too much.
7. Left 4 Dead 2 - PC/360 - An excellent coop fps. Im not even big on horror games but this one was a blast. When they added all of L4D1 into it in a patch, it became the go to PC game for my friends for a while. I still havent played VS in it.
8. Skylanders - Wii/360/PS3/PC/3ds - Gauntlet with toys, while expensive, it is a helluva lot of fun. It is my wife second favorite game of the generation, right after Terraria.
9. Wii Sports - Wii - A gimmie. Stupid bowling sucking up my nights.
10. The Witcher - PC - Damn near the best RPG I have played, I rank it better than even Planescape Torment. The game brought you to some no win situations and really taxed your emotions and your mind. Really this sums it up pretty well:

Terraria opened my eyes to just how good indie games could be. I put over 80 hours into that one in about a week when it first came out, and I hear they've added some amazing content over the last two years.

I'm not going to try to decide what the top ten are, but I will say this:
I am shocked that no one has mentioned Portal yet.

I tried to form a list of 10 but couldnt decide which games to put on it. Portal was one of them though.

In fact, it was the only one on my list not from a portable or Nintendo platform.

You need to fire it up then. They changed alot. Heck wiring alone changes the game completely. But the new biomes will throw you for a loop. My weapon of choice in in it right now is a cannon.

I thought about it, but Portal, while brilliant, did not grab me as much as the others I mentioned did. I beat Portal twice and have not touched it since. If you noticed, most of my list is multiplayer games.

Playing Portal without a mouse is like driving a car with a Dorito.

10) Wario Land: Shake It!: A gorgeous hand drawn 2D game in one of my favorite gaming series. Wish it was more like the original Wario Land, but that's its only shortcoming.

9) Super Street Fighter IV: Easy to get into multi-player, easy to control, fun to use new characters.

8) Catherine: Interesting story, strange and goofy characters, interesting game play mechanics, and sheepmen.

7) Megaman 10: Sheepman and an all new 8 bit style game. Loved it.

6) Dead Space 2: Vomiting undead babies, eye drilling, and a main character that is losing his mind.

5) Uncharted 2: Took everything from the first game and improved on it multiple times over.

4) The Orange Box: Despite getting rid of my 360 years ago, I still have fond memories of going through Half-life 2: Episodes 1 and 2 in a single night.

3) Bioshock: Rapture was the main character to me, my favorite single setting in a video game.

2) Metal Gear Solid 4: The reason I bought a Playstation 4. At the time it looked stunning and I enjoyed the weird disjointed story.

1) Super Mario Galaxy: Unbridled joy.

I thought about Portal when making my list. Thing is though, and this is a problem I have with most puzzle games, once you finish Portal you have no inclination to ever play it again

I don't see why. Portal has no action. It's move here, jump here, put portal there. I played it on console and it was one of the easiest games I've ever played. I feel like anyone with a rudimentary understanding of how to use a controller can easily play Portal

It's the puzzles that are challenging
